Installing a winch

I will be installing a winch soon on my Jeep It has a stock bumper but the winch will be relatively small (3-4k lbs) will not use it much at all. Should I up grade the bumper?? I also have a cheap battery should I upgrade that a well??

If you use a winch mounting plate the bumper won't matter since the plate bolts to the frame. You are going to put a ATV winch on it? What are you going to use it for. A cheap battery should run a ATV winch OK. Personally I would go with at least a 8k lb winch minimum.

A 3-4k winch is not strong enough as said before you need at least a 8k winch. For about a hundered dollars more you can get a Rugged Ridge 8.5k winch $299 and a winch plate costs about $60. The rating on the box is for the first layer of line after that the pulling power decreases. Your 4k winch will turn into a 700lb winch by the last layer. A 8k or greater will only go down to about 4k at the last layer.
