Installing Axle Shaft Question

Hi Guys,

I am replacing the u joint on my right side axle. I took the wheel off, removed the caliper, unbolted the hub and the axle nut. The axle slid right out. I want to make sure I don't screw up putting it back in.

Do I just grease the splines and slide it back into the tube very carefully? How do you get it lined up in the differential? I did not take the diff cover off when I removed the axle. Just want to make sure it goes back together smoothly.

Thanks!

You got it, just turn it back and fourth and you will feel it line up

Ok, thanks. And where exactly is the oil seal I need to be careful I don't knock out? I couldn't see it when I took the axle out.

The D30 seals are between the housing and the shaft. They are replaced via the housing. The shaft is pretty much free to fill up with mud and gunk, unless there's an aftermarket seal installed. There is a plastic "seal" between the yoke and shaft, but it doesn't keep much from entering....

You'd have to serious try to knock that seal loose before you dislodge it. It takes a real effort to remove them when you want to replace them.

I would be a little cautious reinstalling the shafts.... that seal is not bulletproof by any means. I mean you won't knock it out, but you can damage it if you are not careful... just don't slam it home if you know what I mean.
