Installing Smittybilt tire swing away after the fact

OK, so I hoping someone has ran into this. I have had the Smittybilt XRC rear bumper on for a few months now, and so far so good, pretty sturdy bumper. The install instructions need work on their products which brings me to my question. I ordered the swing away for the spare, do you need to remove the bumper to install this? I have looked at the instructions (bumper is arriving today) and from the looks of it, to install the latch part you need to have it off. Any experiences in this? any tricks? thanks!!

I didn't remove my XRC bumper when I put my XRC tire carrier on. I got my carrier about six months after the bumper.

Lock tight your handle. Mine either fell off or got stolen! luckily the guys at the shop had parts to fab me up a new one for half the cost of smittybilt replacement. Other than that I LOVE my XRC bumper and carrier been running it a year with no issues.

I have installed two XRC so far, one on mine and one on my brothers. Mine was perfect and you definitely install the bumper first then the swing away, no problem. My brother's was the second one I did and that was an entirely different beast. The cup or socket that the swing away shaft sat down into was improperly welded from the factory. When we installed the swing away the latch mechanism on the swing away was at least 1.5" higher than the receptacle part on the bumper. No amount a shimming could solve it. Bumper was defective. Took about 1 month to get them to replace it, but they did. Solved the problem.

My XRC is over a year old. It has just now started to rattle a tiny bit, but not bad. Everything else has held up well. I did not reattach the third brake light. Didn't like the way it looked.

It is fed. law that all cars are made with a 3rd break light, but each state has different laws regarding how many lights a car must have. So you will need to look in to your local and state law.

All states are pretty much the same in that, if it was made with that third light, then one must be installed. But you can move/modify it as long as you mount it high enough for your state.

The fed law only requires the 3rd brake light be there when the vehicle is delivered new to the dealer. Not all states care if it remains, California for one doesn't care. Many of the states back east are more particular and require it be there.

Not true, Oregon only requires 2 lights to be installed on a working vehicle. Each state has its own regulations. Many don't have a 3rd break light law. Again Research your local law to confirm.

Anyone having an issue putting the nut plate and nuts under inside the bumper with it attached, so that you can connect the latch plate. This is almost a bigger pain than the 4 bolts behind the gas tank. Or maybe I am not thinking outside of the box...

I don't remember exactly how I did it but I did do it twice. Didn't do anything magic, just needed some patience.
