Yes we are a dying breed. Metallica ruined it for me with the Black Album. uggggh. They should have quit after Justice. People look at me crazy while the tops off and Im cranking old Maiden, (live after death of course, by far my favorite album ever ).

Maiden tends to do that to people. Especially old people!

Wait a minute, I think we we're starting to climb that hill. lol.

Yep, i said it. It don't bother me none.

Bring any snot nose punk into a metal show, and we'll show 'em what a Pit REALLY IS!

Metalica is really screwing up with the new stuff. Their classics are the best.

Yeah, they probably don't know what to think or do. If they laugh, they may be risking an a$$ kicking!

Metallica is a JOKE. There is definitely not any Metal in Metallica anymore. They should be stripped of their name. Those guys haven't done JACK SH*T in more than a decade. It baffles me how they STILL have such a large following. Then again, sh*t normally does attract alot of flies doesn't it.

If you want metal, check these guys out. They've been around just as long, and are STILL pumping out good, hard tunes. Click the link below to hear CD quality music. I included a live video from youtube as well, but it doesn't do the band justice.

Now, as far as the Interior Lighting goes:

I got the replacement bulbs in yesterday. They are WAY bright as you will see. I ordered 2 of the 194 Superstar Bulbs With Metal Heat Sink, and 2 of the 194 168 W5W 2825 Super Wide Angle Superstar Bulbs. Like I said, these 194 bulbs are BRIGHT, so I ended up using the Super Wide in the Auto Trans Housing because it is actually a little bit dimmer thatn the Heat Sink bulb.

The brightness of these will dwarf your Gauge Cluster. I'd actually like to find a way to dim them a bit. I thought maybe coloring over them with a blue marker. Any other ideas?

I'm hesitant of posting these pictures because they ae not accurate. These bulbs are so bright, I couldn't get my camera to capture the proper coloring. The way it looks to the eye, is actually a deeper blue than what is shown. It's more the color of how your Gauge Cluster turns out, but just not quite as deep, because it's so bright. Contrary to the pictures, there is very little Teel affect. It mainly looks blue to the eye.

I'm going to try and get to the HVAC controls tomorrow, but that really depends on how drunk I get before the Superbowl.
Go Red Birds!

Trip,
For this light in the Trans housing, the light is not uniform as it is in the Gauge Cluster. Probably because of the positioning of the bulb and because the bulb is a bit more focused than your OEM bulb.

very nice man, makes me wanna have an auto now :P hehe i like it though.

You can dim them by installing some resistors.

I dont know exactly how the dimmer on our jeeps is wired but hope some one will chime in and help us here. Its pretty simple though.

Resistors and diodes will lower output. So you put in 5 volts, you get out 4....

Resistors or diodes will both work.

My dimmer has zero affect on the Trani light, it just dims the dash.
I wouldn't want to install anything that would dim the dash light any more than they are.
Those LEDs are a bit dim as it is, ya know?

Well, off to bed.
Lots of beer to drink tomorrow.
Gotta get rested up for those 12oz. curls!

oh i see so you want to dim the tranny light only then?

go to the store (radio shack for example), buy some diodes (dont be shy, they are cheap). Rip out 1 of the wires going to the tranny light and install the diodes. The ones i have are N1s and they lower voltage by about .4V each so you can connect them in parrallel or if you want, you can connect them in series so they reduce more power. Also i like to double or triple them up in parallel to keep the load lower for each.

also direction does matter so your light will not work if they are backwards.

Here you go, by doubling them up, you reduce the load for each so its easier on them and by making the chain longer. You lower the voltage so the longer the chain, the dimmer the light will be. Install some, if its not enough, install some more. Let me know if you need some more info.

My main recommendation as to why use diodes vs regular brown resistors is because resistors create tons of heat vs these.

Umm......uh.....duh......drool...drool.

Lots of great info there Tripp. Unfortunately, it doesn't ring any bells with me. I've never been much of an electronics buff. In fact, I failed that class in high school. No joke.

If I get a clue, we'll talk more about it. But until then, I don't want to waste your time on the subject. lol.

Thanks though.

I ordered the HVAC bulbs today and did my dash yesterday. I managed to get the rear wiper and defrost switches off too, they use the same bulbs as the HVAC. so when i get the LED's ill see how the switches come out. anyone else try and do those yet?

Just as before, It's only the picture fooling you.
The Red DOES light up, but the camera is not picking that up.
These cameras are funky like that. They only pick up what they want, and even then, the color is not as accurate as you would think.

*The Red is NOT as bright as it was with the OEM bulbs, but shows up fine. The Blue makes all of it a bit dimmer, as we discussed before because Blue is obviously not as bright as White.

Hope you got the right bulbs. I found that my owners manual lied to me about what was REALLY in there. I'll do a write up in a minute.

I want to do my switches as well, but haven't because I'm not quite sure how to yet. They are the only things that are still green in my cab, and I'd like to change them to Blue. Post everything you can about how you do your switches. Pictures are a BIG help too.

Thumbs up HVAC Controls - Blue LED Mod (98 TJ)

I did the HVAC lights yesterday before the game. They came out nice, but I ran into something very unexpected while doing them. The owners manual for my 98 TJ states that the bulb in the HVAC is a #194 which would be comparable in size to the PRND21 Housing Light. So when I ordered the lights for this job, I ordered all #194 bulbs.

However, once I got into the HVAC I found that the bulbs were not #194. They are less than half the size of a #194. They are actually a #37, and there are 2 of them. The #74 LED's that you put in your Gauge Cluster is the replacement for the #37 in the HVAC as well. They also install in the same manner as the Gauge Cluster, with the twist locks.

When I ordered the #74 Tri-LED's for the Gauge Cluster, I ordered 7 instead of 5, just so I'd have a couple replacements if I need them. They came in REALLY handy once I found that I needed that size for the HVAC.
If your going to use the Tri-LED's in your HVAC you will need to gently squeeze the LED's together to get them to clear the inner hole of the HVAC.
You might be better off ordering 2 single LED's for this, but they may not provide as much light as the Tri-LED's. Your choice.

As for the install...it's very simple. You don't even need to disconnect the 3-4 wiring harnesses in the back of the HVAC to do this. You should have enough play to gently pull the HVAC toward you to get to the bulbs.

If you need instructions, here they are:

1) Remove the defroster vent cover to access the 2 screws at the top of the Center Bezel.
2) Remove those screws, and the one located behind your ash tray.
3) Gently pull the Center Bezel toward you to remove it.
*If you remove your glove box ahead of time, it allows you to get a better grip on the Center Bezel.
4) Remove the 4 screws holding the HVAC controls in place, and gently pull the unit toward you. This will give you access to the bulbs located on the right side of the unit, and the top left side of the unit.
5) Remove the bulb and twist lock by gently turning the twist lock 1/8 - 1/4 of a turn counter clockwise.
*You may need some needle nose pliers if your fingers are big.
6) Replace with a bulb of your choice, test, and put everything back together in reverse order.

That's all. It's a very simple, quick, and inexpensive mod.

Keep in mind, this is for a 98 TJ with slider controls. I've talked with Ericpl, who has a 97 TJ with slider controls, and it is different. He actually has been able to use the same bulb from the PRND21 housing in his HVAC controls. So that must be a #194 in his. He also told me that there is only 1 Bulb in his HVAC, while mine has 2 Bulbs that are smaller. Why the HVAC slider changed from 97-98, who knows.

99+ models with the nicer HVAC controls will obviously be different as well. I think they have 3 bulbs in there, but I don't know what size.

And here are the results...

The Red DOES show up fine in reality. Just not with my camera.

Bad photo, but more accurate color.

Better Photo, but the color is a bit too light.

I'm just waitin for the UPS guy to deliver my new LED's (hopefully wednesday at the latest). I took apart my dashto figure the sizes of the HVAC controls. My jeep is an 04, and there are 3 bulbs, all of them are type B neowedge base LED's from autoillumination. i found 1 type A in the defroster switch. to get to the switches just pop them out of where they are mounted, then twist the bulbs out. I promise as soon as the UPS guy delivers them i'll take the pictures for the install.

There are twist lock bulbs in the switches???
Hmmm....I don't remember seeing anything like that on mine.
Of course I wasn't really looking either. I was more focused on the HVAC Controls. I guess I'll have to pull the thing apart again and take a better look.

It just makes me wonder if there's a difference with mine because it's 6 years older. But now you got me wondering. So I think I'm going to go pull it apart.

Either way, please post pics of your HVAC Mod and Switch Mod.
It will be a good reference point for people that have the newer TJ's and the newer controls.
