is 99 a bad year for the tj?

Ok quick question. my father in law has a 99 tj with 140000 on the 4.0 he has a rod knock. Someone told him that year was know for having cheap rods from the factory, or something? I own a cherokee, and i'm on cherokeeforum all of the time and never heard any thing like that. Thanks for any input.

Rod knock at 140k? Doesn't come up that often. Sure he hasn't abused it and went too long between oil changes?

I've never heard of any particular bad years for connecting rods, could be though. My guess is that it's just a rumor.
When you have a choice, buy American.

No, actually 99's were the best year. Because that's what I drive.

My OE 1999 4.0 died with a little over 200,000 miles on it just before it became mine and now has a 1999 XJ 4.0 which is now up to about 65,000 miles. Never heard of anything different about a 99 other than something about the alternators .

Yeah Neither and Burton are right, the 99 is the best year. I have 80k on mine and it runs like new.

I see the problem.

In '99 the world was gearing up for the upcoming Y2K Apocalypse. The guy at the factory putting in your connecting rod that day was distracted thinking about how many generators, potable water drums and MRE's he could cram into his basement.

I bet you wish now that the computers went haywire and that robots now ruled the earth huh?
