What the heck! It looks to be the shape of a Dana 35 but I have never seen a Dana 35 with a metal fill plug...

It's a Dana 35.....

Fill plug doesn't matter. It's very obviously a D35.

I considered that as well but I still think it's a D35. The diff cover just doesn't look like that from an 8.25.

and you can see the Dana symbol etched into the cover. bet if the OP cleaned it off you could read the PN's on the cover....

Measure the axle tube, as the 35 has 2 3/4" tube and the 8.25 has 3" tube.

It is definately a Dana 35, no need to measure anything. The earlier non c-clip D35s had differential covers with metal fill plugs. Original Dana D35 covers can even be bought new with metal fill plugs.
