Is your TJ a Frankenstein like mine?

Some days I don't know about this thing...I think third shift must of been playing a joke at the plant to see how many parts they could swap around between years. Like to see if the QA guy would catch it.

I have been searching for a A/C compressor for months, bought one that I was told "absolutely" will fit...nope. And to expensive to ship back. my loss. Even bought the lines for it...at my loss again. Parts that were supposed to cross never matched up when I looked online and found specs. Finally bought one off ebay by picture only and it fit. Supposed to goto a 99 Sport, but mines a SE, the one that I bought earlier was for a supposed to be for a SE, but i see it on sports all the time. Any ho, it bolts up, it fits and I am ecstatic!

My engine block is kinda funny also, according to year identifying digit, its a supposed to be a 95 (I own a 99) but all the stickers, barcodes, other marks jive with 99. Maybe it is a 95 block but i would like to do some research to see it it even would fit. and why in the heck would you put a 4 cylinder back in it if you needed a lower end, the whole thing would have had to come out.

Has anyone else noticed some funky stuff jiving with theirs? I fear I have only scratched the surface!

usually its us that mods them like that! For instance, mines a 94' with a 95' top and 92' doors! (YJ though...)

Are you the first owner? Know any past owners? also, it is possible with the sport/se that the dealer or prev owner put different stickers on?

Funny this thread was posted, my TPS went out yesterday on my 97 4.0. long story short, absolutely NONE of the part numbers listed for a 97 fit my jeep, or any TJ for that matter. The plugs were 2 different sizes with different number of pins... bought a duralast TPS with a part number for a 95 YJ on the off chance it it would work, and it fit perfect... I bought the jeep a month ago, and figured it was something the PO had done.

past owner had it two month to tow behind his camper, but didn't realize car seats for his kids didnt fit so well in the back seat so bought a Cherokee and sold this one to me. Carfax has two other owners but no personal info as to who they are.

and unless they are hiding 2 cylinders somewhere its not a Sport, lol. Funny thing is this a/c compressor bolts up to a bracket I had the local dealership run the part number on and tell me it was a 4 cylinder specific bracket for a/c and alternator, but the compressor came straight off a 4.0L

My 97 was built June 97. Found about 25% of the parts are 98. Helps to know when going for Auto parts.

Mine started out as an original begining of year 99 TJ sport (there is a difference). And since I have had it it has gotten:

99 & 1/2 and newer hubs & rotors
2002 hard top (the one without the side vents)
2001 sahara full doors
98 xj ax15 tranny
98 xj np231 t-case
LJ dana 44
XJ hp dana 30
Soon to have durango steering box

It gets a bit difficult to keep track of it all, needless to say, your not alone.

Jeep has a long history of this, reaching back to the AMC days. If you think you've got it bad with TJs (or YJs or Cjs), you should look into the Full size Jeeps.

They're a hodge-podge of GM, Ford and Chrysler parts to begin with, but people on the assy lines didn't seem to look closely at the bins they grabbed parts out of. Mid-year changes are/were the worst.

you can always find out what day your block was cast.. pretty easily too.. the date is a part of the block casting, and on the 4L (probably the 2.5 too) the date is on the drivers side at the rear.. you can even find out what shift (day or night) cast your block.. something to look at to verify that the engine is likely original.. also they made several different brackets for these motors, so some might not bolt right up.. for example, i took an AC compressor from a cherokee 4L (same generation block/head as mine) and the bolts didnt line up with my bracket.. but to me it wasnt worth swapping brackets..

I have a 2004 sport but my rear axle has a Rubicon Dana 44 ring and pinion as opposed to a normal Dana 44 ring and pinion. It was a pain during the regear because the first set of Dana 44 4.56 gears didn't fit! Apparently that day at the factory they ran out of regular Dana 44s so they pulled one out of the Rubicon pile, stripped the locker and 4.11s, put in an LSD and 3.73s and put it under my Jeep

Tell me about it. It took me two weeks for them to regear my axles instead of two days.

My '04 has a ventless hardtop and no vents in the tailgate. Upside of that error I guess is that passengers can't SLAM the door shut, air pressure slows it right before slamming.
