It broke off :(

So I went wheeling with some friends yesterday on some private land the one of our club members owns. It was about a 2 hour drive to get there. After a few hours of wheeling I was climbing this hill and the next thing I know my shift lever comes off in my hand
After looking at it, we realized that the previous owner had welded it once before. It broke off right at the tranny(ax-15).
I was able to get it into 1st gear with some convincing from a screwdriver, and drove it back to camp. after some deep thinking I came up with the idea to stick a socket over what was left of my shift lever(only about 1/2") and a couple ratchet extensions and it was shifting again
My question is, where a good place to get a new/used shifter for a good price?
I've seen them on ebay but I thought $50 seemed kinda steep.
I'll get some pics up a little later.

what year is your rig? maybe call a junk yard and see what they got or rab up one for your own maybe. sounds like that might be kinda hard with only 1/2 inch left on the tranny tho

^ I have to agree, for the money go and get the B&M short throw shifter, my friends swear by them, I'm just looking for an excuse so I can get one too.

I welded it up today and put it back in. It will hold me over until I replace it. A friend of mine has a spare he is going to give me the next time I see him.
The short throw shifter would be nice but I just spent a bunch on a sye,cv shaft, adjustable rear uppers, and an undercover fabworks ultra high clearance transfer case skid.
If I told the wife I needed to spend another couple hundred I might as well set up a cot in the garage

Dude, what you waiting for...the garage is good enough for the Jeep...good enough for you...I bought a house with a 2-car 1-cot garage just for these occasions...

haha, There is more than enough room out there but it gets cold at night and the only thing in the fridge is beer.
Wait a minute did I say beer? Okay I'm sleeping in the garage

Haha, I started reading this and I was thinking what are the chances of seeing something like that after seeing this happen to Bob the other day... Then I saw it was you. I've got to say, its the first time I've ever seen anyone use a socket and extension as a shifter (especially for as far as we had to drive). Glad to hear you're getting it fixed, it sounds like we'll be hitting up either Green Ridge or Rausch Creek pretty soon so hopefully you'll be ready!

Good luck!

It's all welded up and ready to ride. I drove it to work today. The drive home from Maryland was a little scary though. The socket was almost completely rounded off by the time I got home. One of the guys in the club(Scott) has a shifter for me I just need to meet up with him.

I've got some funny pics of Bob somewhere with his broken unit in his hand. All you needed was a ratchet to make it a complete aftermarket ratchet shifter.

I would love to crack a joke here but I don't need anymore gremlins myself.

All I can say is nice job, and always carry a roll of duct tape from now on, as you never know.
