it snowed. and i should have 4 wheel drive

so up here in northwest indiana we just got pounded by some lake effect snow, so on the way to school this morning, before most of the streets were plowed, i thought it would be a good idea to try my 4-wheel drive for the first time. well i put the lever into 4hi like i heard i should, and continued driving just assuming that i was in it. but i hear theres an indicator light that should pop up?

can you explain the process for me. i really didnt slide at all and from stops there wasnt any fishtailing.

i have a '98 btw

2nd question of the day and id appreciate your help!

Don't mean to jack the thread, but is it normal for my steering to be a bit clunky/jerky when in 4wd?

yeah, in portage, next to laporte county which got slammed. it just fully stopped a few hours ago actually. its melting now though.

yeah, i put it into 4hi down my street at had no problem at all, even turning my wheel sharply alot just to make sure, then i put it back down at the corner because that main street was cleared fantastically. then we got to a rough patch and i slid abit in 2wheel, and then switched it back in the school parking lot and had no problems.

i was just worried about the indicator light, but im gonna test it out right after school now to make sure.

sounds like 4 wd is working. read your manual, most are shift no the fly, so they prefer you to shift into 4 hi while driving. 4 lo is at a stop in nuetral or slightly rolling.

oh yeah, those indicator lights don't always work.

My light comes on when I turn on 4hi. It should be on the top right and say 4wd with ( I-I ) but turned vertical.

I really like my light not coming on! I hate no offence to anybody the idiot lights on vehicles these days are annoying. Example- my moms08 tahoe fully loaded. If a tire is one psi down on are the warning light comes up and tells us.

What happened to people actually learning to due normal work on there vehicle/maintenance

Well I can tell when my 4wd is on but that's just from me using it. Only real idiot warning I hate is the darn plug in ur seat belt sound some new vehicles have. I always wear my seat belt but you can't be in the vehicle and not be wearing the belt or else it goes nuts.

I'm in the less bells and whistles the better boat tho. I'd rather not have a billion things that can go out and me have to worry about paying out the ass to fix.

Damn Brother, why you gotta hate on the "dummy Lights?" I have a 2005 Yukon SLT Autoride and absolutely love all of those "dummy Lights." If the Yukon aint bitchin' she is running well..Much like my wife, but that is for an entirely different topic all together...

The TPMS sensing system for Air pressure is a great option (IMO).. As a matter of fact, I believe every vehicle made for 2009 is supposed to have them.. That is what my tire guys told me anyway. It is all about safety when it comes to tires.. Heck, I like them so much that I had an additional 4 TPMS sensors installed when I put on the 22" wheels. How many times have you been driving down the road and hit a board or something and wonder, "Did I hit a nail??" I sure have and it is nice to have the option to scroll through each one of your tires to see if they are losing pressure..

I agree with you that a dummy light in lieu of a gauge is ridiculous, however dummy lights in addition to gauges only helps.. again IMO!

I am also a "Dummy" when it come to vehicle mechanics but do perform most of my maintenance myself when I can!!

Ever sat in your vehicle for periods of time where you didn't need to be buckled in? Yea. it's annoying when you don't need it on.

nope not really, i mean the seat belt alarm wouldn't go of if you're in "park" would it?
