Talking It's good to have friends

So being new to this forum (and jeep ownership, for that matter) this is my first post. And I'm starting off with a bang.

Since day one of getting my 98 4cyl TJ, I knew I wanted to do an engine swap, so I asked around, and got multiple suggestions. I was told the 4bt, a Chevy 305, and even the Ford 308, and of course the ever popular 350. I got stuck on the 350 and have been looking for a cheap one to rebuild since. Until today.

I'm in the Army, so you get to meet people from all over the place. And my buddy, who hails from NC (I come from WV) has been working with engines since he was a kid (mostly bikes though.) Well, I was telling him about my wanting a 350, and how so far it had been fruitless, and he tells me, "Hey, I did a swap in my Chevelle, and I still have the Engine/Tranny at home, and if you want it you can have it." Now, mind you its not a 350, but a 307 from a late 1960's model Chevelle, and he is GIVING it to me, for free. His reasoning? "Hey, what are friends for?" Made my night..

Now, my big issue is to play the waiting game.. We are stationed in Hawaii, and the Engine is in NC and I'm not due to leave island for another 6 months.. Freight charges would be ridiculous (upwards of 1k) so I have to twiddle my thumbs until I get back home to pick it up, and I can't wait till I do. Cause hey, who can argue with free?

Not a Chevy guy but I've always heard the GM 307's were dogs. But that was from a performance point of view. Not much in aftermarket support. Like I said I have no experience with them, just word of mouth.

If yer gonna put a small block chevy in dont waste your time with a 305, the 350 takes up the same amount of room and are plentiful. Most peeps are leaning towards the newer LS motors these days, and for a good reason. They are great motors and you can build the F**k outta them. Ford made a 302 not a 309. Also a good motor especially one out of a late model fox body.

I have done swaps on all kinds of cars and trucks and experience has taught me that if you want to do a swap you are better off with a complete donor car. All of those little parts/pieces will nickel and dime you and delay if not kill the project.

If you want to do a v8 swap you should look for a late seventies - early eighties Chevy 1/2 ton 4wd pickup or suburban. That way you get the complete swap (motor-transfer case) and you can swap the full size axles at the same time. The $1500-$2000 you will spend on an old beater truck will save you big $$$ in the end.
Little things like driveshaft yokes, power steering brackets and exhaust flanges are always what murder progress on swaps.

Step #1 will be to find a daily driver because swaps always take at least twice as long as planned and cost twice as much $$$.

305's are plentiful, and cheaper than 350's. 305's got a bad wrap due to retarded cam timing, excessive smog equipment, and less than stellar full feed-back Quadrajet carbs.
A healthy 305 with standard cam timing and a decent carb are just fine. That is, if you're wanting a carburated engine.

A small block Chevy adapter to the TJ transmission is far simpler than swapping the whole drive train and axles. If you're going to the trouble to swap axles (coil spring mounts, control arm brackets, etc., etc., etc.) there are far better choices than GM 10 or 12 bolt axles. Just my opinion.

Just for the record.. I was not attempting to offer the best possible setup with highest quality parts.. My previous post was only intended to be a recommendation on the best way to do a motor swap and get axle upgrades on a tight budget.

If money was no object then this thread wouldn't have been based on the concept of getting a free 305 and swapping it into a 4cyl tj.
