January 2013 best chromoly D44 rear axle kit?

When I first investigated this question on Wranglerforum the answer was Superior Evolution SAGEV45. Now I'm not so sure.

Six months ago I rabbit-hopped sideways off a rock wall giving too much gas and slammed down on my rear passenger wheel enough to break both tire beads off the rim. Tailgunner told me after mounting my spare that he saw a wobble on that wheel getting back to camp. My wheels check out OK and there is no noise or grinding on the right rear after a few thousand miles including high-speed highway driving and I don't feel it wobble, but I believe I must have bent the wheel face of the axle flange. Whether or not this is true, for peace of mind I want a rear axle kit to carry on the trail.

Superior Evolution axles seemed like the right answer last year, but investigating all the offroad vendor sites they might take your money for an order for the SAGEV45 kit but there is nothing available and Superior is out of production and no word on when/if they return. Everyone I tried to order from would substitute the Discovery axle kit (and some charged the card for Evolution kit immediately even while making the substitution - BAD DOG!). Discovery is made offshore and carries a 10 year warranty; Evolution axles were made in U.S.A. and had lifetime warranty.

Aside from American/Taiwan made questions, today it seems there are a TON of "Alloy USA" axle kits readily on the market, I see some "G2" and "Ten Factory" kits, and Superior Discovery D45 kits. Any material difference between 4140 and 4340 chromoly? Any brand better than others today?

Does someone have experience with recent stock, and is there a good source at a good price today? I am hounding the internet trying to get delivered price below $350 and ready to buy now for the coming season. Thanks

I have Superior Discos up front and 10 Factory 30 spline in back and have had zero issues with either. Was wheeling with a fellow a few weeks ago with a sick rig on 37's and he said he had twisted up his 10's a couple of times but that they warrantied them for him no problem.

Dont know a lot on axles but I can tell you about the materials. 2 1/2 inch is the limiting ruling section (diameter which will transform to martensite on quenching) for 4140 while 4340 is good for 4 inches. The impact requiremnets for the two grades at this strength level are the same and I would not have considered there to be a difference in fatigue properties at the same strength level. The reason for this is that 4340 has more Ni in it than 4140.

Basically, if under 2 1/2" diameter, there isnt much of a difference. You just need the 4340 when bigger than 2 1/2" for when doing hardening.

I installed a pair of Alloy USA shafts in my Rubicon a year ago. No complaints; they fit. They just need to take "USA" out of the name. "Alloy India" would be more accurate.

What about Yukon? The 4340's are supposedly made in the USA.

First one I found, may be cheaper elsewhere.

Call Superior and ask for Mac. He will give you a straight answer on the axles. Remember that it is great to have a warranty, but even better to not have to ever use it because you bought a quality product.

Off topic but did you go back and do Hammerdown/Cakewalk? I don't remember that obstacle on Bullfrog.

OP, remember that warranties won't get you home. That being said Superior (if you can get them) Ten Factory, Alloy Usa are all fine.

Superior's Discovery shafts are in fact made in India while their Evolutions are made just outside of Los Angeles. That said, and this is direct from Mac, VP of Superior, that the Discovery shafts are made using the exact/precise same materials, with the same heat treatments, and from the same blueprints as the Evolutions. That was enough to convince me to go Discovery in the rear even though my TJ has Evolutions up front. He also said they are seeing the same reliability in the same uses with the Discoveries as with the Evos. Not to mention a lower cost.

Mac also said they are finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel on getting caught up on their Evolution shipping backlog.

Nope that was bullfrog but I was a ways ahead of you so they may have taken a detour before you got there. That was just before the part that you had to pivot on your slider to make the turn...

I run Superior Discovery shafts at all 4 corners with no issues at all. If you call and talk to Mac, ask if he's got some heat treated joints to go with those front shafts.

I ran it in a Rubi on 32s and only had to winch once. Its nothing like the hammers.

Almost all the real tough stuff have bypasses too.

ok update ... swallowed my pride and decided to install the Superior Discovery set.

Searched internet for prices on SAG-DC45 set. Asked Jeff at Rokmen to quote me a set. Found a price $263 delivered, Superior website quotes $330 MSRP so I ordered. Got an answer back from Jeff, no Evolution no Discovery kits available nada zilch sorry. Two weeks go by I ask my $263 vendor for status update since it showed "Shipped" for over a week ... oh, sorry, no stock available no word from Superior on expected back in stock nor delivery.

Go back to another widespread Google search for SAG-DC45. Summit Racing lists price for $279 and I eat the shipping. Summit has live chat support so I ask if they show anything in stock. Yes, *exactly* ONE kit nationwide in stock in Reno, Nevada. I get live chat to hang on the line until my Paypal order goes through and he confirms that one set is committed to my order.

Now ... I don't care *how good* the axles turn out to be ... I have *serious* doubt that Superior Axle and Gear is even a going concern ... going to be around to honor their ten year Discovery warranty, let alone the phantom Evolution "lifetime" warranty.

They better be good

SAG-DC45 kit arrived this week from Summit. They look great, and they supplied retainer plates for both drum and disc brakes so no need to buy from dealer ($13 quote) in preparation of pressing the bearings on. Wheel studs are press-in versus threaded.

That is true, Mac accepted an offer to run a major part of G2. I am wishing for the best for both Mac in his new position and for Superior Axle as well. I know of no details beyond that however.

Well time will tell,If Superior doesent get their stuff together here in a few months I`ll be looking else where for my axles. I`am trying to support an American Company, but I cant wait a whole year. The saying goes if you haven`t used it in a year you dont need it...
