JCR Rear bumper kit with homemade tire carrier

I've been working on building a rear bumper for my rubi. Wanted to get the spare off the gate since it seemed to be pulling the top of the gate out 1/2". Couldnt afford most bumpers so decided to build my own. I bought a JCR rear bumper kit with hitch and d ring tabs. Then got a hinge/latch kit from EMR offroad and built my own tire carrier with 2x3 120 wall tubing and a couple 90* pieces of round tubing. I plan on putting rotopax cans in the hoops. Almost looks like I copied JCR's carrier but I actually didnt see it until after I had mine planned. The current 31" spare sits a bit far out because I've made this to fit my 33s.. and the cans behind it of course.

Bought the wrong size shackles.. but they'll work. 1 size too small. I powder coated the shackles and frame tie-ins Mirror Red. The bumper I painted with rustoleum semi gloss. Much easier to patch up then powder.. besides its too big for my oven!

Here's a few pics.

That's awesome! my spare is a 33 12.50 and my tailgate is shot. I want to do something like that also. Thanks for posting the pics!

Very Nice!!!! You should post a write-up on how you made the latch and spindle assembly. I would love to make one of these. How much do you have ($$$) in materials?

The tire carrier latch/hinge came as a kit from EMS offroad. Kit also had a polyurethane bumper/support and the tire plate. I bought my own steel to build the actual carrier frame. The 2x3 ran about $50. The bumper kit was from JCR. Price depends on options and I got mine on the black friday sale. The round tubing I got from work. And of course lots of welding wire, gas, and then paint supplies. Shackles were about $20 from a logging supply. Probably best to just order them from JCR with the bumper.

EMS currently doesnt have the complete kit I bought, only a hinge/latch kit.

Tire Carrier Hinge and Latch [TC-HL] - $75.00 : EMS Offroad, Custom 4x4 Fabrications

Installing the hinge to the bumper was easy. Just used a hole saw on the completed bumper. Put the shaft through close to the vertical plate of the bumper and was able to weld the length of the shaft to the plate as well as weld both sides of the top. Bottom of the shaft ended up being perfect distance to slip a scrap of 3/16s plate in and weld it to the bottom plate as well.

Used a hole saw to also cut the end of the main 2x3 beam to match the spindle collar. Then welded it solid. The spindle collar is 4" tall so that was perfect distance to set the beam on the poly support and end up with the beam and collar flush at the top.

Also the in-construction pic doesnt show a small triangle brace I welded in later under the 90* support beam.
