Jeep Cherokee 4.0l fit in a 97' TJ.

I have found multiple cherokee's in my area for sale for dirt cheap but the engines are good and the bodies are junk, frames rotted and all that good stuff. and i am really only interested in the engine, trans, and T-case. Will those fit on a TJ?
The Cherokee's are from 1995 -1999.

I have the same question as I have an 4.0 trans and transfer from an 05 ZJ and would like to replace the 2.5 in my 97 tj.

I don't know about the ZJ, but an XJ to a TJ the engines shouldn't be a problem. to my knowledge the tranny and x-cases will be. I've not done it but a book I have (wrangler tj builder's guide) states you'll be faced with major mods. you're better off finding a tj getting parted out for the tranny and x-cases.

the same book recommends that if you are going from a 2.5 to the 4.0, you might be better off going to a small block chevy v8. the book says the swaps are ~ the same price and labor, for much better performance. (that being said, nothing beats a 4.0 for durability, IMO.) the book also suggests this web site:

Novak Jeep Conversions - Home

which I went to, and wow....the free knowledge base is amazing. check it out.

actually XJs were from 84 - 01. They started offering the 4.0 in 87. There wasn't much difference between my 93 and my 00 XJs engine wise, but it did have an updated ignition system in the 00 (no distributer, ignition coils.)
I don't know enough to compare the trans or x-cases as my 93 was a 5spd and my 00 was auto. plus I never tried to swap either drive line into a wrangler. honestly, wiki xj cherokee and you will get a fairly comprehensive summary of the XJs history.

from wiki:

Engines
  • 1984-1985 2.5 L, 150 CID AMC 150 I4, Carbureted 105 hp (78 kW)
  • 1986-1990 2.5 L, 150 CID AMC 150 I4, TBI (fuel injected) 117 hp updated in 87-90 to 121 hp (90 kW)
  • 1984-1986 2.8 L GM 60° LR2 V6, 110 hp (82 kW)
  • 1985-1987 2.1 L Renault turbodiesel I4 (initially sold in U.S. and until 1993 in Europe)
  • 1987-1990 4.0 L, 242 CID AMC 242 I6, 173 hp (129 kW) with Renix fuel injection system
  • 1991-1996 4.0 L, 242 CID AMC 242 "High Output" I6, 190 hp (142 kW) with Chrysler fuel injection system
don't know why they don't list the 97-01 engine specs, but whatever. you can find them online I'm sure.
