Jeep dies and starts back up

While driving on the interstate going up a hill my 98 4cyl just shut off. Pushed in the clutch turned off the ignition, turned it back on and let the clutch back out and it started back up and running fine. Gauges are all good and no CEL. It has done this twice in the last 100 miles or so. Any ideas?

Scratch the gauges good part. It has done it two more times and the fuel gauge Went from three quarters tank to one half the first time. Second time it went from three quarters of a tank to over full. Fuel pump/sending unit maybe?

My Regal use to do the same thing. As I was driving it would just shut off. I had to shift into neutral and start it back up. No mechanic ever found out why.

Start with the easiest first. Check the connections on the battery cables.

Yeah they are all good. Just replaced the battery a couple months ago and put on brand new cables.

I would just go through and start wiggling ignition components. Check for corrosion/chafing. Then look at the fuel pump

Mine did something similar, I had water in my tank. When you start it do you have to give it some gas?

i used to have a car. after doing a lot of modifications it was fast. so fast when i hit the loud pedal it would stall if i didn't have at least half tank because the fuel would push back in the tank and the pump was near the middle. i'm not suggesting your jeep was accelerating this fast. i'm saying maybe because you were going up hill when it happens and maybe the pumps also going out.

Could be fuel filter. Does it act up when you have a full tank of gas?

You can try a fuel pressure test before changing any parts.

Yeah it does with a full tank as well but only after its been running for a while and I fill it back up.

It's definitely not being caused by a clogged fuel filter which just doesn't happen on TJs due to its lifetime fuel filter which has a positively enormous filtration area. A bad fuel pump would normally cause it to sputter & be hard to start so that wouldn't be my guess either. My best guess is your Crankshaft Position Sensor is going bad. The CPS generates the engine's master timing signal & when it goes bad, the engine can shut off intermittently.

Changed the CPS today and 130 miles into my drive home it starts shutting off again?!?!?

I had a vehicle do this same thing. It would start up good and drive for awhile, it started with small stalling at lights and led up to engine shutting off as I would go up a hill. I could only assume afterwards that it was sending the fuel but not getting the spark from the distributor so it was flooding the engine. I have seen where if the CPS was bad you would get have trouble starting as well as the intermittented power losses. I know all cases are different.

after having the issue for a couple of weeks here is a list of a few things I have noticed.

1. The issue seems to be more persistent when the ambient temperatures are higher.

2. The issue only arises after having driven the Jeep for longer periods of time straight with no breaks. It is my DD 10 miles to work and back, have never had an issue there. I drive home on the weekends (about 3.5 hours one way), and it starts after having been on the road for about 1-1.5 hours.

3. The issue is almost isolated to only going up hills. Has happened once while going down but only after having climbed a big hill.


With all that being said, I am back to thinking fuel pump issue! I am thinking that it is getting hot and losing connection or something. I am a mechanic but this is my first Jeep and have never worked on them other than this one. Anybody have any other suggestions?? Also what fuel pump should I go with, if I end up going that route? I have read on here to avoid Airtex, so that much I know already. Any and all help or criticism is welcomed and appreciated.

I have a friend with an "08" JK and she will be driving and the engine will shut down. It's and automatic and the shop can't find the problem either. It runs good until it dies. I would like to know more about your finds if you get it fixed so I can hopefully help her out. Thanks.

Well I was having the same problem.....and what I did was when it got on E I stopped at autozone and picked up Ethanol its in a white can and has pics around top of can of boats jeeps atvs and a few other. The guy says I should do it 3x more everytime I fill up. Its 11.99 a bottle. It wrked.!!!!! So you should try that.

So yours did the exact same thing? Only on long trips? Just trying to be sure. I've already thrown $90 at it with the CPS. It runs perfect other than on these long trips.

Nothing that I would consider out of the ordinary. Again I've only owned this Jeep since November. It does not get hot to the point of discomfort or even to make me think there should have been more insulation from the factory.
