Jeep Interior Smells

So I got my '97 Jeep Wrangler TJ recently on the 4th of July and the previous owner(or previous' previous) must have left the windows off in a little bit of rain because it has a small amount of that smell in it. There isn't A/C so those air vent scented things aren't going to work. Is there anything besides coating my Jeep in Febreeze that will get rid of the smell? It only smells when you get in the car before starting it, so I don't need anything radical or expensive.

An old trick we used on junker vehicles we were tinkering with was to slice two apples in half and leave them peel-down on the floorboard for a day. It did wonders, even with an old 1984 fifteen-passenger van that sat for five years piled up with spare parts.

You could also pull the carpet and pressure wash it at the car wash- chances are it has bacteria and such that has been feeding on random crap that's spilled in it over the last few years and that's what you're smelling. Pressure wash it thoroughly then lay it in the sun to dry 100% before you put it back in.

Other than those options, Febreeze the tar out of it.

Mine smelled kind of funky when i first got it, but only if it sat with the windows/doors closed for a couple days first. I got my carpets wet in an unrelated incident, pulled them out to dry in the sun for a couple hours, and never had the smell return.

It may just be mold in the carpets you need to kill.
