Maybe the dirt pulled the vacuum lines off the front axle?? I doubt it but possible

I had that happen on a gravel pile once. Got high-centered and when I tried to engage 4WD I heard a grinding sound from the gravel being lodged in the skid.

I am thinking that you are wondering why all four wheels aren't spinning. That is what lockers are for; they make turtles work all of their claws in unison.
