Jeep maintenance question

Why do jeeps require so much maintenance and repairs? I understand why high performance vehicles like corvettes, porsches, ferraris, and such would require a lot of maintenance, but why jeeps?? Just a curious question!

Think a Corvette needs a lot of maintenance? Try taking one down a trail and see how much maintenance it really needs!

I am probably one who does a little overkill on the maintenance side. I have no problem changing fluid, lubing the chassis and doing anything else I can think of. Sure as hell beats breaking down.

I think most of the tinkering is by choice...look at any of the "How Many Miles Does Your Jeep Have?" threads, and most say xxx,xxx miles, with just regular maintenance, and maybe one or two minor replacement parts.

The beauty of the Jeep is its simplicity. You can do the work yourself, and get advice from others who have done it.

You don't see so much tinkering on the Toyota Corrolla site, because thesy just bring it to the shop for regular maintenance, and don't talk to their friends about getting the coolant flushed or the oil changed.

Plus, my Jeep is ten years old with a hundred thousand miles on it, and that's considered young. Show me a car run for 10 years plus that doesn't need some tinkering once in a while...

Good explaination! Agreed! The only other vehicles i know of that people discuss everything about similar to jeeps are high performance rides and motorcycles.

Well, people buy Jeeps because they like to tinker. This weekend I'm going to do my thermostat, flush my radiator, and check the water pump and fan clutch. Then in the near future, I'm going to change my gas tank skid that rusted out.

Before the Jeep, I had an Acura TL. Just to change the headlight was 3 days in the shop with the front-end removed. Other than checking the oil once a month, I never opened the hood, or would have dreamed about replacing parts myself...

I'm with ya, I had a Nissan before my jeep and even changing the oil could be a PITA
