Jeep Shopping and Values

Ok so I have been hunting around jeep shopping for the better part of a month now, doing what I would call practically scouring the earth. I like a little bit outside of Nashville, TN and all in all I'm having very little true luck. Sure there have been plenty of jeeps for sale I have ran across, but all either way to high of miles, or way to proud of owners in my opinion. This will be the first jeep I have ever bought so I'm pretty excited, I just don't think people who are trying to sell jeeps understand that investing $2,000 in aftermarket parts doesn't make your jeep worth $2,000 more all too often (as many car owners of every type do plenty of). Regardless I would prefer a more unmolested Jeep as half the fun of a jeep to me is going to be picking things I personally like and installing them, and knowing they are installed and done right, with the right parts. Anyways plenty enough of my rant fellows, FINALLY I feel like I found the Diamond in the rough with this one.

1998 Jeep Wrangler SE For Sale In Murray KY - Oakley's Used Cars#

When you inspect you may be saying seems like a pretty good deal on a really clean jeep, well I called and the owner was very nice (thankfully! it's about an hour and a half drive) and informed me the jeep has a clean title is very clean inside and out, but the engine on it was replaced. Apparently wasn't running when they got it the radiator had been leaking and the person had been dumping stop leak in it, long story short cracked the head, and did damage to the engine internally. So he admitted they replaced it with a new engine that had around 100K miles on it. Still seems like a really clean jeep with other then the engine low miles. But now I'm questioning what the value really is on it. Plus it's already not my preferred 4.0 L6, but I am willing to settle a little.

Anyways any help on what you guys feel like the value on this jeep would be would be greatly appreciated you guys know a lot more about what these things are fetching then I do. Also any other good deals you guys see around would be taken into consideration. I am trying to keep this purchase around $10,500 or lower so I can do a couple upgrades and because this wont be my DD for long. (just until I get my 71 nova back together then it becomes a weekend warrior)

I live in west,TN and had to drive about 500miles one way to get a good deal. Expand your search out to at least 300 miles and your options will open way up. Jeeps are very pricey around here, patients and willing to travel can save you money + get what you want. Good luck.

Max price on that jeep should be $5k. I paid their asking price ($10k) for an 06 sport with the 4.0 engine and D44 rear. Keep looking.

That sounds a tad high for a 98 even if it's extra clean. The odometer mileage may not mean a whole lot anymore considering the motor has over 100K on it. I'm getting ready to buy a 2005 X with the 4.0L Automatic with about 115K, 1 Owner, clean CARFAX for $9,990. I'd agree and say, expand your search area and be patient. Plus, if you really have your heart set on the 4.0L, find a different area to compromise on. I don't think you'll be too happy in the long run going with a 2.5L of you really want the 4.0L. Just my 2˘ :-)

Thanks for the input guys you are pretty much just reaffirming what I had already been thinking, and I think you're absolutely right with waiting on the 4.0L jeep. I have been shopping around decently far out but I will expand my search out and continue to hunt. I have until probably around the end of March before I really NEED to pick up a second car, meaning until then to find a jeep.

i think you are smart to pass on this 98 SE and I know you will find the perfect TJ because you are doing it right by being patient and not settling for something you do not really want. Good luck, let us know what you end up purchasing.

I will I'm sure I'll be on here updating you guys, maybe more then you would like. Already almost ordered my Poison Spyder fenders and roll cage but decided it's best to hold off until I purchase the jeep hahaha, but I'll provide plenty of pictures as I slowly modify stuff trying to avoid having two total project cars that I'm dumping money into but we all know which route that will probably take!

Well after a little more hunting and searching finally had some luck, found a couple ones I like, both just over 100k miles one a 99 the other a 00. Both have small pluses in minuses in my book, but are both pretty stock, and both L6 engines. One is a black 5spd manual with a new besttop tan soft top, the other is tan automatic with a tan hard top, both are listed just under 9,000 (I think I can for sure get them down some with my master negotiation skills). Even better they are both within about 5 minutes of one another so I can go check them both out and see what I think. I'll keep you guys updated if I pull the trigger on one or the other.

I looked for 6 months...gotta holdout for what you want it will be worth the wait. Have you looked on car guru.com? They have a market price comparison that can be helpful. Just saw a couple of rubis and an LJ not to far from you on that.

I like looking at different vehicles and prices so I checked out that site for fun just now. I love how they indicate the value of the Jeeps. Very cool.

yes I have been checking car guru every couple of days I agree it's a very user friendly site and has a lot of benefits. I have been shopping multiple sites. Not at all set on the 2 I have found but I think they are worth a trip out to go see what I'm looking at but also not SET on buying one of those 2.

If you're unsure at all when you check them out, keep looking. If it doesn't feel right when you haven't yet spent any money, imagine how you're going to feel after.
