Jeep will crank but no start

Hi,
I had this thread about the alternator and the serpentine belt that snapped here.

I installed the alternator and the serpentine belt, but now I have an engine that cranks but doesn't want to start.

To be fair, I have to admit that when changing the alternator, I did not unplug the battery (shame on me) and once, the wire that goes to the fuse box (I don't know how it is called) touched something beside the spark plugs box and I heard a little faint hissing sound and there was some white smoke. I don't know if this is related to my problem now.

So, now, the engine cranks, but doesn't start. The battery is weak, so I tried to jump start it, but with no success.

Anyone can help in the right direction on what to test?

Thanks

I checked them -visually- and they all seem ok.

Also the white smoke got out near the tip of the cable (near the spark plugs box), not from the fuse box.

A visual inspection will do you no good. Also check any fusable links if your jeep has them, and use a meter.

Something bugs me though.

If it is fusible link to the alternator that burnt (that's where the smoke got out), then this means the alternator is not able to charge the battery. But that shouldn't stop the engine from starting, no?
