I've noticed the Warns all come with wire, not synthetic. Is there a reason?

They have started making models with synthetic line. Looks like they add a "s" to the end of the model. They are a little higher.

I'm not sure how smittybuilt and other brand sell winches for $400 with synthetic line when a good synthetic line costs $300 alone.

I recommend a m8000 and undercover fab winch mount. Ageless stranger is going that route on his rig.

While I trust, use, and love Warn and their winches, their synthetic rope is WAY WAY WAY too expensive. My only guess on why their synthetic rope is so expensive (it is made to resist heat) is possibly because their lawyers got involved. Personally, I'd go with a Warn winch, use the wire rope until it is ready to be replaced, then replace it with 3/8" synthetic rope. Wire rope can last a long time if properly used though synthetic is a LOT nicer to work with. I went through 3 wire ropes in 7-8 years before switching to synthetic which outlasted all of the previous three wire ropes before the Jeep it was installed on was stolen last year.

I wouldn't use a Chinese winch like from Harbor Freight Tools or Smittybilt if it were given to me for free.

Yep. Smittybilt is. But remember some warn's are made with foreign parts. Not 100% but pretty sure the m8000 and up are made in America with majority of USA parts.

I have the SmittyBuilt 8000 lb. winch that came with the synthetic rope and am very happy. I have used it to pull trees after notching them, as well as pulling out a friends 1994 Land Cruiser because his Warn 12000 lb. winch had unexpected gear problems that day. I was also skeptical of Smitty Built, and am not advocating that all of their products are the best, but I have had good and reliable service from my winch. The best part is that I bought it from a local vendor and I have a life time replacement warranty. The bottom line is that any tool can break. If I were doing "hardcore" wheeling every weekend and pulling multiple times a day, I would have done more research and possibly bought a different winch. With the liftime warranty and the past performance, the Smitty Built has been more than adequate. My friend with the Land Cruiser will attest to that. Hope this helps.

Amazon has m8000 for $540. Plus warn has a $50 rebate the rest of the year.

I don't think anyone is trying to talk down a particular product just their opinion.

I just like American made products.

Here is a better price for the Warn VR8000 with free shipping. Plus there is the $50 factory rebate so the winch would end up costing you $369.

I'm considering getting the harbor freight one as well lmao but I barely wheel so it's not gonna be under hardcore use and I'd hate to have a nice well earned winch get stolen :/

Thanks

The information in these forums is always great. Everyone says what they feel which I like. People buy what they can afford and what they need. Just remember you get what you pay for. Warranties cost money just like the winch itself.

Honestly I doubt there is a difference at all. They are both made on the same assembly line...

Well put, I'll look into it once I get a bumper. What lb rating should I go with? Because harbor freight has the 12k lb for about $400 I think or less. Which I theorize since it can pull so much pulling my jeep shouldn't stress it so much therefore giving it longer life.

Im not going to SELL you anything.... just give you my opinion.

I just bought an ENGO E12000 for $349 shipped to my door (Synthetic 10K is $449). I read the reviews of the Winch shootout from back in June/July since I wasn't going to spend a grip of cash a winch that will most likely get used ( in my case ) 5 times a year if that at this point.

Warn, Smittybilt, Ramsey, Milemarker, Superwinch and others have had there name up in lights for many years and some of there pricing I believe is dictated by the limelight. I'm not saying that they aren't good or great... I just can't see spending $1000 for a winch ( on the high side).

My decision was based on research that I had done, not what others have said and done.. I did take it all in to come to my decision. Because the wallet may not be as deep or the name is not that important to me as others. Using all the information and advice given.... base your decision on performance and price.. warranty is also a BIG part of it.

I am totally happy with my decision, even though it's an 'off-brand' from the big names.

Use the 20% off on the HF winch, or wait until Turkey Day and I believe it's 25% off. And HF offers a 2 year warranty for like $50, which would be worth it IMO.

The smittybilt winch comes with a warranty FREE plus a FREE winch cover that I turned down for some stupid reason.

Remeber most bumpers and winch plates will not accept a 12000lb winch.

True, I'll have to check with the bumper when I do decide to order one. I looked into those engo ones and have heard great things!

Generally, you can't really go wrong with Warn. I like the fact that they are in my neck of the woods here in Oregon . I happen to have a Epi9 Superwinch, as I came across a deal too good to turn away from roughly 4 years ago. IMO both are decent, proven performers that won't let you down on the trail.

You should be fine with your stock bumper, winch plate prices average $100-$200. Rough Country does have a plate for just under $60.
