I have a 2006 jeep wrangler unlimited rubicon. Every time I fill it up, the gas nozzle automatically stops at almost 13. The fuel tank gauge says it full. Online all of the specs from tons of web sites say that it has a 19 gallon tank. I am pretty sure the gas tank is stock. What is going on I have a 13 gallon tank where I think I should have a 19 gallon tank. What you guys think about this.
It could very well be a factory foul up. It's been known to happen. My 2006 se 4 banner has a 19 gallon. And it probably shouldn't. But when I fill up it goes right up to 17 or 18 gallons. But that's after line four days below the red zone!
A friend and I were discussing this and it's probably more related to the sender. There's a bit of a weird curve that I'm guessing has to do with the mounting arm on the floats (do they still use floats). Also, there seems to be a bit of randomness between one Jeep and the next.
My '05 Rubicon Unlimited is fairly linear and seems to be reasonably accurate, even near the bottom of the tank. My gauge does seem to accelerate below 3/4 of a tank, but not by a whole lot.
His '03 Sahara is decidedly non-linear. When his gauge reads 1/4 tank, he's pretty much making a beeline for the nearest gas station.
Mine on empty and his just starting into the red take about the same amount to fill.
I have the same problem normal fill my jeep up when it gets to 1/4 of a tank but only takes 13 or 14 gallons even the one time i let the gas light turn on didn't fill up close to 19. Can this be fixed? Really don't care to much but would be nice to have a fully working gas gauge.
its the gauge becuz when i fill up it goes way past F and i can run on E for some time... i usually fill up 16 gals. and sometimes it likes to go up and down depending on her mood
x2 on her mood. Mine will read full when it's full for a few months. Now it's gone back the other way, at full will only read 3/4 of tank. One day I know it will work the other way again. I just use the trip odometer.

I was thinking about this a bit this morning while driving to work. I remember older vehicle were (I believe) resistance based. So in theory, a slightly stringer resister on the line from the sender could align the gauge a bit better.
However, with Jeep's irritating over-computerization of everything, I'm not entirely sure if that would work. Might be worth a try. Someone could just get under there with a multimeter and measure the values between full and empty.
It really depends on the jeep, and the tilt of the road at the station. My 02TJ would kick on the light way before my 06 LJ. My 06 is close, when the light comes on I put in about 16.5 gallons. On my 02 it would only take about 14 when the light came on.
They're all inaccurate to a degree. Replacing the gauge won't fix anything, it'll still do the same thing. Mine's exactly like yours. When my light comes on I put in about 15 gallons to fill. All it means to me is I can still drive 40 or 50 miles after the light comes on before it comes to a halt. And actually I think that's the idea with a low fuel warning light anyway, it's supposed to come on in time to still allow you to drive a ways to get to a gas station.
I'm pretty sure its not the gauge it has to be some components in the tank that.measure how.much.gas is in the tank if I have a 19 gallon tank I want the light to come on at 17 right now my light comes Omar about 12.5 to.13 gallons I will ask my mechanic tomorrow
Do you also end up with the needle sitting at full for a few gallons before it begins to move? If so, then the gauge can possibly be adjusted so that it works correctly.
You have a gauge that can display 0 to 100.
The sender is sending values of 20 to 120.
So the fix is to drop the values that are being sent by 20. (As I said earlier, possibly by just putting a small resistor inline.)
The non-linearity of the floats/sender I don't have any ideas on.
It is the sender, not the gauge. Remember that the fuel pump is in the tank and is cooled by the fuel in the tank. Running the tank empty in not a good thing to do as the pump will start running hotter, and then go out. You should fill your tank at 1/4 or about 5 gal. left in tank. It wont hurt to run low once in awhile but not a good habbit.
