JK's.......the Joke Jeep?

Ok, first off I don’t want to step on any toes or insinuate anything about anyone who owns the newer jeeps. This stemmed off a discussion I was having with some of the local jeep buddies. They think the newer JK jeeps are the joke jeeps due to the bulky fenders, motor, price, and so forth. We were debating the quality of the JK jeeps and the type of people that buy them. I personally don’t have any problem with the JK’s, but some of the “old timers” do. They believe the only people that buy them are either soccer moms or people with too much money who are never going to take it off road anyway, more like a show vehicle and fashion statement than an off roader. I’m just wondering your opinion on the subject of the new JK’s, whether they are stock of modified in any manner. And if this is just something that happens with any new generation of jeeps, like when the TJ’s first came out. Did all the YJ owners feel the same way about them as some people do now about the JK’s?

youre opening a can of worms here LOL i think like anything else the newer models go through the growing pains and to say one model is a joke over another isnt fair. Im not a fan of the unlimited but i do have a JK, then again Im not a fan of the automatic in the wrangler but that's personal opinion. I understand why people would make the soccer mom comment but then again those mom's are more than likely driving an unlimited. but lets take a step back and think about it, how many people took/take their YJ/TJ/JK off road? im sure the percentage is the same. Im sure the next incarnation of the wrangler will be equally hated by the Jk owners.

Having been around when the TJ first came out in 1996, the exact (!) same types of comments were made about the new TJ and its owners back then too.

There are a couple things I definitely don't like about the JK including its V6 engine and transmission straight out of a van, its double-skin body construction, and CV joints instead of u-joints, but it has a lot going for it. Its axles are actually stronger than the TJ's.

That said, I had a JK in my garage for a weekend installing some rocker guards onto it for a friend and I have to say that after that ordeal and having driven it several times during the weekend, I quickly learned that I preferred my TJ over it in a number of ways.

Here's what people who upgraded from the TJ to the JK have to say.

We have both, and I have to say that we wheel with all model Jeeps and the JK's keep up just fine with the rest....

agreed, not all are being drivin off road or doing hard core rock crawling. i'm just curious as to others opinions about the subject and why they have this "hatred" towards them.

Yes. Those coil springs will never work off road. The interior is too nice. Jeeps aren't supposed to have a smooth ride. They're too much like a car. TJs are for cheerleaders.

Anyone else remember 1995?

I've had CJ's, YJ's, ZJ's and a JK. I went back to the TJ. It is definitely my all time favorite! The JK was too much like a car for my likes, but I did like it. Just like the TJ the best.

I've never been in one but i've heard some guys saying that it seem like they spent too much time when making it on all the comforts and gadgets, not really on the off road aspect, more luxury than anything

I bought a 4 door JK for the wife and I love it. I feel like it has lots of plus signs and not many negative signs. I think it is great and I plan to take it out for some light wheelin when I get the chance. But it really kinda stops there for me. I'm a TJ guy. I kinda feel like I will always be a TJ guy. That is what I know and that is what feels familiar to me.

So in many ways, CJ guys will always be CJ guys. YJ guys will stick to the stupid things they call jeeps, and I will always be stuck in my ways. I'm glad new stuff has come out and that I can enjoy them. But I doubt I will ever enjoy it in the same way I will with my TJ.

I'd have to disagree, the JK's are always slowing us down for one reason or another, usually because of overheating of the engine, transmission or even because they are just to wide to make it through a tight section of trail, the plastic keeps falling off, honestly modified or not I can't stand the JK. I'd wheel just about anything but I wouldn't be caught dead in a JK.

Thats what it seems like to me but some of the guys who have been wheelin for a while seem very stuck in their own opinion about the JK's, and some about the TJ's as well

feel the love. but then again opinions are like a$$holes....everyone has one. fact of the matter is it all comes down to personal preference. I like the smoother ride and I'm sure not all drivers have the same ability, that being said a newer jeep owner who isn't as experienced on a trail will likely have the issues you've seen. As others have stated they haven seen the same things you and I'm sure that yet more people will see other things. Joke or not people buy them because they like them and enjoy them, i could never go back to any other model, that's me though. As JeepJones has stated time and time again, He'd not be caught dead in one.

What do I do in 5-6 years when my daily driver has 200K. Wait I will be retired and my daily driver won't have to make the 100 mile commute. It will just be for fun........

Watch out for me then... lol

But dont MOST people who buy jeeps buy them for some form of off road capability not a squishy ride. the first jeep i had was bumpy as heck but you get used to it and learn your jeep

I personally wouldn't own one only because they are very limited in their customizability (is that a word?). The TJ is the most customizable vehicle in the world and it's simple to work on and change. I also do not like the wider, squatty body on the JK or the fat fenders. I think it's just plain ugly looking! I consider them a Jeep for yuppies and people that wanted a Hummer but couldn't afford a Hummer. I am not old or an old timer but I do have a 98 and an 05 TJ. I am also not a soccer mom, yuppie or a lover of Hummers. If I were given a JK, I would sell it and buy more stuff for my TJs!

no most people buy them to get to work and enjoy being able to do what they want. the JK is in no way a squishy ride but its a lot smoother than any of the previous models

You can bash it all you want, but don't say something that isn't true..possibilities are endless on your jeep, or my own.

I have a JK and it nice inside for a jeep but it's not nice inside for a "car" like you guys keep saying.

We test drove an 09 Rubi off the showroom floor and liked it, but the dealer wouldn't deal, so we walked. Wife saw our TJ on another lot, the guy dealt, so we bought

Taken from allpar.com

The reasons the 4.0L went away [except in the Wrangler, so far] was due mainly to age of the manufacturing tooling, which was worn out. The long stroke made it harder to clean up the emissions of NOx, and NIH ("Not Invented Here"), in my opinion, also reared its head. To completely retool would have cost as much (almost) as the 3.7L v6 did, and the Dodges were going to use the 3.7 as a base engine. Logically, the engine group did what they were told to satisfy the dealers...."Make a modern engine, and junk the old ones." This statement is my opinion, based on conversations at the time.

also typically inline engines cost more to manufacture take up more space and at 500lbs the 4.0 would cost more to ship.
