Question Jumping Speedometer

My '98 TJ 4.0 recently started missing a little when cold. At the same time, the speedo started to "wander" +/- 30MPH or so, and occasionally "jump" all the way until it hits the trip reset shaft. I know, I know, "fastest jeep ever" ... I pulled the instrument cluster, cleaned & "twisted" the connector contacts, etc. No improvement. Given the simultaneous engine troubles, I am now thinking it could be a grounding problem. Any thoughts? Advice on grounding points to check/clean? Thanks!

Do you happen to have a Rugged Ridge Shorty SYE? If so, they use a tone ring with an electronic pickup. More info here if you do have that setup..

Nope, stock driveline setup (5sp manual). Thanks, though!

Sounds like it's just a bad sensor. Mine did the same thing but it would jump and sometimes just not work and would randomly kick on and off.

Had mine looked at and it was was a bad sensor and it cost me like $6 to have replaced.

It was a few months ago but I'm pretty sure it's located on the side of the transmission. I would check it out.
