Junkyard Upgraded

From time to time I've seen some people mention some items you can get at the junkyard that will work with your tj that are better than factory items ie thicker, stronger a combo of both and more. Such items like the Durango steering box, alternator swap and the grand Cherokee tie rods. So I figured I would make one thread with all of these things on them. If you know any post them up but be sure to be as specific as possible. Such as what years work or don't work, what model vehicle and/or engines, any write ups to go with it, direct swap or mods needed to fit so people don't come into to much trouble doing these mods.

So here it goes, here are some of the things I've found from doing a little searching.

*1998-99 Dodge Durango Steering Box. Must be from a 4WD V8
-1998- Snow plow option 3:1/4 ratio/ or a 2:15/16 ratio
-1999- 2:15/16 ratio
-Much stronger and better ratio than stock
-Most prefer the non snow plow version of the Durango steering box. There is a cast in bump in the top of the box that has to be cut off because it contacts the front cross member on the TJ.

*1993-98 V8 ZJ Grand Cherokee Tie Rod
-For XJ and TJ
-Much larger in diameter ($20-$65 at the Junk Yard)

*1990-95 Ford Taurus Electric Fan 3.8 ltr. V6
-Replaces factory clutch driven fan
-Moves more CFM
-Can be hard wired to run after shutdown to reduce heat soak
-More reliable
-TJ direct bolt in
-XJ requires modification (the extent is unknown)
-First Gen 4 Runner

*1993-1995 Ford explorer electric fans
-Late model TJ's
-Available at parts stores as a HD version with 9 or 10 blade

*1995-01 Ford Explorer or Mountaineer 8.8 Rear axle swap
-For TJ,XJ,YJ, and ZJ
-Requires modification of leaf perches and other small items.
-Much stronger and parts are plentiful
-Write up... http://www.wranglerf...swap-92569.html

*2000 Dodge 1500 pickup brake master cylinder
-TJ direct bolt in

*Rear disc brakes from a 1994-98 ZJ with a Dana 35 will fit the 8.25 or Dana 35
-You need the Backing plates with parking brake shoes and hardware, Rotors, Calipers and soft lines from the calipers. Its best to replace the backing plate studs with Grade 8 3/8"-16 x1.5" bolts with lock nuts, as the disc backing plates are thicker than the drum plates. The disc backing plate will have to opened up a bit with a air grinder or Dremel to fit the 8.25. The parking brake cable will have to be from a Mustang or Crown Vic. Still searching for the correct lengths.
-Hammer out backing plate studs from the zj and you wont need new bolts. Passenger side parking prake cable from a liberty works best for both sides.

*1996 and older F-150 and F-250 Springs
-The front coils give you about 4 inches of lift on an XJ or TJ

*Ford U-joint U-bolts (Rear Driveshaft)
- FORD E-150 (1975 - 1988) FORD E-250 (1979 - 1996) FORD E-350 (1979 - 1996) FORD ELITE (1975 - 1976) FORD F-100 (1975 - 1983) FORD F-150 (1979 - 1996) FORD F-250 (1979 - 1997) FORD F-350 (1979 - 1997) FORD BRONCO (1979 - 1996)
-Slight drilling will replace the straps on a 30, 35 and 8.25 yoke
-Part number if you want to buy new (PRECISION/MOOG 53410 (534-10))

*Alteranator Upgrade
-http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/durango-160a-alt-swap-2002-tj-1165805/index2.html#post12138575

*Grand Cherokee ZJ Front Springs
-Move them to the rear for 3"-4" of lift

*Larger Oil filter for larger surface area and more oil capacity for the 4.0
-Motorcraft FL1A

*Grand cherokee pitman arms are the same as TJ drop pitman arms.
-Years???

*Swap distributer cap, cap adapter, rotor, wires, and coil off of a mid 80's Ford 300 6 Cyl and regap plugs to .045 and you've got a hotter ignition system for the 258.....the coil puts out a lot more and the bigger cap keeps the spark from crossfiring.

Looking to put a e-fan on my 02 tj. You say the taurus fan works and is a direct bolt up. Do I need the shroud from the ford and how does it connect to the thermostat? Also interested in how to shut off with ignition. Please email me rossmanwrangler@yahoo.com
I do not honestly know my friend, i found this list on another forum and thought I would share it on here. maybe someone will chime in about it

The Windstar cowl induction.

I made one. There is no performance benefit even though this is one of the few true cold air intakes available for our TJs. The true benefit is for those who do high line fenders and cannot use the factory airbox. Another good reason is to free up a bunch of space under the hood for other things.

Would you need to pick up 4 coils from the front of these trucks? (2 truck "front" coils for the front of the TJ, & 2 truck "front" coils for the rear of the TJ?)

More reliable from a junkyard ? Bwahahah..

I tried this swap. It wasn't a direct bolt in and the junkyard fan died within a few months.

NakedJeep -> The Garage -> Modifications -> Taurus Fan
