Honestly it's not for me but I think it's a really cool idea if you use them, which it sounds like you will.. I like the new paint job.. How did you attach them? Can we get some shots of the mounts?

The tank may lock to the body but what's keeping someone from just lighting it on fire or putting sugar in the canisters? Happened to someone I know. Wasn't pretty? Just my 2Ącents

You could attach a hang glider to your hard top and fly over grand canyon...and folks would still say it was a bad idea. Nice to see something original once in a while.

I think it's cool. Anyone who doesn't like it can shove it and quit b***hing. It annoys the heck out of me. And it's not like it's going to change your mind. I think it's a great way to carry water with you on the trail or gas if you need it or whatever you want to do. That's the great thing about jeeps and America, the freedom to do nearly whatever the hell you want. Good job.

I bet they look better with the top off.

You're a braver soul than I am. I personally wouldn't ride in a Jeep with gas cans next to the door openings. Especially open door openings.

Couldn't do that here, way to many tight winding trails, with trees I barely fit down

If you must carry fuel, this is the only proper way of doing it.

Let the debate begin! Oh no what if someone rear ends you??? Or wait someone will steal it! That looks like a target to me huh bud? Let's shoot it! Ugh my jeep my way of carrying whatever I want. This thread has been some of the most disgruntled comments I've seen. To the point where I may change forums

Personally I like the idea and I think they look good, especially with the new color. I have a Garvin G2 swing away rear bumper and have 2 Jerry can mounts on back which I would worry more about being walked away with then this setup.

Just because a couple guys don't like your idea your thinking of changing forums? It's not any different at the others, sorry. I think it's a great place for water, I truly do, but if I get t boned in my jeep I don't want 3 gallons of gas going all over my body and igniting, gasoline burns are ugly. Ugly things brother.

It's not just that, they think every negative thing they can say, if you mount gas anywhere on your jeep it can kill you/burn you. You can die on the trail without gas cans. I just hate how these old timers hate new stuff and hate on you for using it.

Jerry b (the old timer im assuming your talking about) isn't haying on you, in my jeep I can have a fire extinguisher in my hand pretty quickly, fast enough to put out a can on the back that's on fire, but not near fast enough to put out one right next to my leg,
Also, jerry b is a mod on another forum so don't join that one
Oh and I have a question: do you have to twist the can or does the mount twist?

Do what you want. Driving a jeep topless and doorless is dangerous as is.

Okay cool. I was thinking two of those next to each other on my tailgate would look cool.

LOL, you guys kill me with some of your comments.
I just ordered a pair of 3 gal rotopacs and the locking mounts. They get mounted right behind the front fenders......But oh, they are for water, not gas....I like primitive camping and these are the ticket.....Besides, they look friggin cool

I think its a cool idea. Odds are if it does happen to get punctured on the trail or smashed in an accident, so would the driver. Adding the cans doesn't make it THAT much more dangerous.

Yeah, let's talk about how best to mount them behind the front fenders...I just ordered two with locking mounts and backing plates.

If you were me, how would you go about it this time around?

Thanks for the idea!

LOL, relax! I'm an old timer-30 years older than you, but I'm into new ideas....Hell, we are both Navy vets, too....I did 20 years on destroyers and submarines, so who's afraid? ..Besides, my Will states I am to be cremated-I tread lightly, yaknow?

I put them on my ATV and love them. If you call Rotopax, they may still have the olive drab colored tanks. It was a limited run and were never advertised on their website. I bought 2 of them as both of my ATVs are green. I think the olive drab would look awesome on that green Jeep.

Would they mount inside the tailgate? Looks like one would fit anyway.

No worries y'all, if I had to do it again I would get the olive drab, also I did a great job of waterproofing but like a previous post; I would have cut out a round piece of sheet metal to reinforce the back. Don't get me wrong, once they are tight they do not move at all. It would be more a piece of mind thing IMO. Also I have the water cans as well (2 Gal) which fit slightly different. the site dose have the exact measurements of the tanks which is cool and very helpful. I placed the mounts w/cans on the side had the wife hold them in place, then marked where the cans would be, after I took the cans off i then marked the holes of the mounts.then drilled and prayed ha ha. There are two pieces of sheet metal you have to drill through w/ a space in between. That was a small pain in the butt. The bolts that come with the mounts are not long enough (trip to home depot) got the bolts and went straight to the plumbing section ( rubber washers and gaskets) this is after I put a waterproofing sealant on the holes and let it dry. (forget the name autozone has it) after all this the rubber washers and gaskets go on each side of the bolts. I tightened to the point where the gaskets fit into the holes sealing it shut. Put on the cans did a test drive on road and trail. And they worked out great, the passenger side was a smaller space to work with, so if you have small hands or your wife could hold the bolt inside as you tighten helps a great deal!

Some other ideas I had were to fab a piece of metal that would also hold the bottom of the can. Haven't really figured this one out much since I have been traveling, and that would require some welding. Speaking of welding that is also a great way to get the mounts on, just Tac EM on if you have the means and want to go that route. The only problem with these cans if you are like me and weel a lot in the swamps you cannot fit a side mounted snorkel on. It would have to be a top mount type.
