Just Beginning To Get It

A couple of days ago, while chatting online with a jeep acquaintance, I commented that he is lucky because he lives in Hollister, and I understand that’s the nearest place to me where I could really go “off-road.” I mentioned that, as of yet, I had never actually driven my jeep in 4-wheel drive. He responded, “OMG, I thought I was the only one who had never used 4 wheel drive!”

Alright, so we’re both fairly new to jeeps, and we both live in California (no snow). We both got them for the same reason: so we could go pretty much anywhere we wanted to go: gravel roads, logging roads, mud, snow, etc. But neither of us has ever gone “off-road” and never anticipate “crawling” over a rock of any kind (not that there is anything wrong with it, just not our thing). So I understand this will be of no interest to the more “experienced” jeeper, but …

Yesterday, I went out driving. Beautiful weather, sunny and warm, top off the jeep. On my drive, I found a little one lane gravel road … and there was no gate, no sign stating “no trespassing,” or “keep out” so I figured, “why not?” The road still had some wet spots, mud and puddles from rain a few days ago, nothing major by any means, not even up to the hubs, but puddles nonetheless. And I drove through them at about 30 mph and in 4-WHEEL DRIVE! Yes, I splashed through a muddy puddle!

Water splashed up on the hood and the windshield, and some splashed me in the driver’s seat … and here’s the thing, I think I GIGGLED. I think I actually giggled (completely unmanly thing to do). It was ... fun! I think I am just beginning to get it.

Good job! Fun, isn't it?
Just wait until you go out on some actual trails with some other Jeepers... you will really understand what fun is then
Even with the stock setup, you will be able to get to and out of some places that you never though was possible.

sounds like alot of fun. i wish i had more trails like that near me. i've got a ton of those gated off trails. i think the power and gas companies use them. i don't know, i have never driven up one.

trails like that are cool to get an off-road fix without paying $$$ or driving 2 hours to a "legit" spot. i only have maybe 4 spots near me to drive around in without getting bullet holes in my tub

it just sucks driving over an hour to go to The Pitts and pay some loot to tear up my jeep every other weekend. little trails like that are nice, and everyboby has at least 1 or 2 near them. glad to see your checking things out and exploring.

You're forgiven on the "giggle" part.

This is just the beginning of the sickness, you know. A sickness that can only be cured with more suspension articulation and wheel travel and bigger tires and CB radios and a custom rollcage and coilover shocks and 5 point harnesses and .................................................I guess you get the point? Lol........welcome to the offroad community, even if it was only on a gravel road with some muddy holes, it's still the beginning of your Jeep chapter.

Neitherfanboy: Check out Frank Raines OHV park. It's a ways from you, but not as far as Hollister. Make a day out of going to Hollister. Use the computer and make sure you check that the 4X4 part isn't closed for some event. Have fun!
