just bought a jeep! advice?

hello i just bought an 05 unlimited wrangler. its the 4.0 six speed long wheel base one. i currently have no idea what i wanna do with her and really dont know much about her yet or jeeps in general. she's got 70k miles under the belt and as good as i can tell is doin good. i'm not interested in any serious off roading as much as i am looks. so far the only issues with the vehicle i have are as follows: it has after market hid headlights installed and most of the time i turn the headlight switch and they turn on then off. i cylce the switch and they come on and stay on till i turn the switch off. i dont know much about the system yet but i plan on doing some research when i get some time off work this weekend. next issue is i noticed the fog lamp dash indicator flashing in and out alot with the switch in the off position. come to find out the fog lamps have been removed. haha. is this as simple as re-installing some fog lamps. if so were to buy? well i guess this is just me introducing myself as a new jeep owner. so hello and if anyone has any advice for me i'm all ears. thanks( not sure how to post pictures or i would put up a picture of my jeep)

HIDs flash when turned on, give them 15 to 30 sec. to warm up. On / off /on is
NOT GOOD for their Ballasts.
As far as the Fogs go, any aftermarket fog should work, provided that's all that
was removed. Stay with a 55 watt set unless you upgrade the wiring system.

Welcome to WF

My advice would be to get rid of it now. It makes you spend money for no good reason. Case in point. I have a factory soft top that is in good condition, looks good and most inportant it does not leak at all. So I went online and purchased a new one and I am waiting on it to get delivered. Also I have a perfectly good stock bumper that I am looking to replace for nog good reason. I constantly have thoughts of upgrading my suspension, tires, rims, radio, speakers and other perfectly good items. It has gotten so bad as to where I daydream about getting things that I will probably never use. Like a winch, Hi-lift jack all kinds of lights.

Save yourself and get out while you can.

Good Luck

Welcome to the LJ club.

You can get some KC Fog Lights that have the factory plug on them so they are plug and play, no cutting or altering of your existing Fog Light wiring... See Jeep Parts, Jeep Accessories, Jeep Soft Tops at Morris 4x4 Center or Jeep Parts, Jeep Accessories & Jeep Wrangler Parts From The Jeep Parts Experts - Quadratec they both have them.

Have fun and spend lots of money on your jeep, she's worth it!

Sounds like a serious addiction. I think it is time for you to join JA (Jeepers Anonymous).

Welcome to the Forum Ethan

Jeepers Anonymous isn't such a great idea. You see all those heavily modified rigs of your fellow members and it just gets worse. It's like holding an AA meeting in a bar.

Well all that you just explained is not for no good reason. It depends how you use your jeep. Depending how much and hard you offroad a new stronger bumper will help, new suspension will let you tackle harder trails, better tires will let you get through trails easier( such as clearing mud), New rims can make your jeep look better and has different back spacing, New radio, well for old jeeps the radio is pretty crap, The stock speakers are paper backed which sucks specially since we get a lot of noise on the road, Winch is always handy. Can use it to help get out of tough spots instead of putting all the stress on your axles ( specially if you have the crap 35 like me ) Lights, well if you go to trail and stay for a whole weekend, you can offroad at night with all those lights on top or on bottom of the jeep.

But idk, thats just me. I'm new to the jeep world to but thats my .02 of it.

As some advice to a new jeeper. New A/T or M/T tires and new wheels is a nice place to start. I wouldn't go crazy and get a big 4-6" lift because everyone else has one. I would start with building armor and stuff like that around the jeep then go with a lift you desire.

Edit: Also, congrats on the new JEEP! It's very addicting! But you're going to love it!

Congrats on the LJ! Nothing else like a jeep in the world, you're gonna like it....then you're gonna love it...then you'll get addicted to it...then you'll be on this forum hours a day reading about everyones mods...then you'll create a list of mods that you "need"...then you're bank account will slowly become depleated as you feed you jeep addiction...and finally you'll become one of us.

Sell it while you still can or there will be no hope for you.

Enjoy the new LJ and welcome to the forum

lucky for me this jeep already has some pretty decent upgrades. the supspension appears to be stock height. the previous owner installed new wheels that look very nice i do not know what brand, but the 31x10.5's on them do the vehicle some true justice in my opinion. the stereo is upgraded as well. it is an alpine head unit with alpine speakers throughout. the head unit has blue tooth usb and an ipod jack, and the speakers sound great. is the speaker/light bars in the back stock. they are attached to the roll bar just fwd of the back seat. the lights are controlled by the switch on the turn signal lever but they look aftermarket. any ideas? and then of course the previous owner installed the hid lights that i'm kinda thinking about removing. as for throwing money, i bought this vehicle so i would quit throwing money at my old chevy z71 but i'm not against spending a little money, the only thing i really wanna do so far is clear 33x12.5s. i'm not looking to much for serious off roading and still want a semi comfortable ride so i'm open to suggestions on that idea. well thanks for all the replies. i was skeptical about how ya'll take new comers haha.

We both get to get into this together. I just got a 06 TJ Unlimited. I haven't had a jeep for years and all of the new stuff and numbers is just getting to be understood. The one I got has still got the original tires on it, 23K miles. One of the things I read about and checked before I bought this one was the Oil Pump Drive Assembly , OPDA. For a certain time during 05-06 the sold a bunch of these with a defective OPDA. If you search for that you can get the numbers that should have the OPDA replaced. It's important since it can wreck your camshaft and a lot of other important things in your engine Just a heads up on that. Good luck and have fun.

i was reading in some other posts about folks avoiding second gear till it warms up, i also noticed in my jeep second is a little rougher than the other gears while cold. what is the reason for this, and can i assume this is normal? in my z71 all the gears were a little rougher while she was cold.

Yes normal...exaggerated in truck transmissions in my experience but I have noticed in it about all man.transmissions from eco to lux to truck when cold.

oh..and welcome to the LJ brotherhood!

well i've got some terribly depressing news. i took the jeep back to the dealer today for them to have a look. the jeep was making a noticble noise while sititng in neutral without the clutch pushed, like a rattling sound. push the clutch and it disappears, push the clutch in to the friction point and it gets worse. and in first and second gear it was making a distinctive sound of a sack of marbles and sometimes in third. with first and second a little stiff to shift into. all the other gears smooth as butter. she is under warranty so hopfully they will find and fix the problem. ideally they will find and fix the problem in a decnet amount of time fingers crossed

I get the same noise. I chalked it up to a jeep thing that I wouldn't understand.
