We just bought our first Jeep, a 99 TJ, red 4 cyl 5 spd. I read countless post on this site before shopping for one so I would have a better idea what to look for. Looked high and low for a early TJ that was as close to stock as possible without frame rot issues. After driving many miles to look at rusted up jeeps we finally hit pay dirt with #9. Juicy, my girlfriend named it(long story), appears to be a real nice jeep. Straight, rust free top and bottom, even the fender tops. U can tell it lived a good life inside and was reasonably well cared for. Has the hard top with half doors with hard uppers that have sliding windows. Soft top has been ordered for summer time fun.
That said, it does have the usual TJ issues that I have read all about on old post so I think I have them covered, but I do have one issue that is a stumper. At some point the PO removed the ac compressor, which I am fine with, and replaced it with the bypass pulley. The problem is that the bracket for the bypass pulley is the wrong bolt pattern for the ac mount. It is about 2" too short to pick up the back two bolt so it is only mounted down with the front two bolts. I Looked it up online at rock auto and it called out a 34237, which is what is on the jeep. I stopped in advance auto and they had one, same part. So they pulled the AC compressor for a 99 and it had the same bolt pattern as the 34237. But their system shows the 2000 TJ's using a different compressor part # so they were thinking they changed the mounting pattern at that time. Rock auto agrees with Advance, they did change the compressor part # in 2000. Soooo do I have an early 2000 mount pattern and if so do they make a ac bypass pulley for it?
Thanks for all the great info on this site. It was funny, after reading so much on this site, we knew more about the jeeps we were looking at than some of the owners did. They were asking us questions about their own jeep LOL!
