Question Just Bought My First Wrangler-ABS anyone?

Today i finally bought a 03' Jeep Wrangler Sport. This is my first vehicle I am only in high school. The vehicle was listed to have ABS but i do not see it flash when i start it up but i do see the symbol for it. I am wondering if anyone knows if this means if I have ABS and the light fuse to the dash is not hooked up or is that how all jeeps come? Also driving home i past 2 jeep wranglers and no waves! Anybody know whats up with this? Am I doing anything wrong?

Slam the brakes you should be able to tell
if you have ABS

Nice, welcome to the Jeep community Colin! Go look under your hood on the driver's side, and find the master brake cylinder. If its brake lines leading out of it connect to a contraption (the ABS pump) on a little shelf down near the fender and close to the firewall that has even more brake lines exiting it and heading down underneath your Jeep, you have ABS. If you have an empty shelf sitting there and the brake lines out of the master brake cylinder just head straight down and under the Jeep, it doesn't have ABS.

Enjoy that new Jeep!

Thank you for the responses! My dad and I actually just went out to check for it and it doesn't have it. It does look like at one time it did though because of rusting where the bolts would be for the ABS. And we did slam on the brakes during the test drive to check lol and we figured it didnt but just wanted to double check. Thank you guys for the help!

It is a MAJOR MAJOR job to convert from ABS to non-ABS which also involves installing new brake lines, I doubt anyone did that.

? I think you mean vice versa right? My d44 swap didn't have abs so my light is always on and I just took relay out of the fuse box... now no abs and the light is still on.

No, I meant it is a major job to remove the ABS system entirely since he said his Jeep has no ABS system installed at all. It is only easy to disable an existing ABS system if you are installing an axle that does not have the required ABS sensor/tone ring.

Who said it had ABS? There's threads on this forum on how to contact Jeep and have them run your VIN for a build sheet. Sorry, I don't have it at my fingertips.

It takes 30 seconds to look to see if it has ABS after being told what to look for. And there are other visual things that can be checked in seconds too. How long would it take for Jeep to respond back with a build sheet after providing them with the VIN #?

I'm in high school and just got my Jeep too and I can tell you that I do NOT have abs and found out the hard way on a back country road. I decided I wanted to turn so I got on the brakes pretty hard then SKIIIIIIIIIID. "Hmm....I guess I don't have ABS"

Haha yeah sometimes you have to learn the hardway. I'm hoping i won't have to do much slamming on the brakes either. The roads where i live are the same way and deer jumping out in front of cars all the time.

Jerry, what I'm saying is that if he bought it from a dealer and "ABS" was on the window mounted list of what was on the Jeep, he would have grounds for suing said dealer. I know it's easy to check for ABS. That wasn't my point, which is why I asked "Who said......"

Sorry for the confusion. I bought it from an independent dealer who mostly deals with wranglers. In his ad he did list ABS as an option but he said when we got there that he wasnt sure. This wasn't a make or break decision on the wrangler so we bought it anyways. I just wanted to figure out if it did or once did but we did check under the hood and it didn't which is what we suspected but no biggie!

Hey Colin,
Welcome to the forum.

In response to your question about those Jeepsters NOT waving, could you tell if they were females or not. I've noticed most females driving Jeeps DON'T wave. Usually to busy gabbing on the phone or straightening their hair, being snobs, or just don't have that Jeep friendliness in them!!

No offense intended towards any females on the forums here!!

Edit:
Where are you located? Just wondering as with winter coming on, lack of ABS could make things REAL fun!!

Lol that would probably explain the one woman who drove by. But a man also passed me and he had a lift kit, big tires and all so i guess he didnt want to wave to a scrub haha. And I'm down in southern md. We usually get a moderate amount of snow but got tons last year. Hopefully get the same amount again so I can test this thing out!

Maybe not. My Jeep is like that so I always get waved at but if I see the other Jeep first, I always wave first. But once in a while I get lost in thought or I just don't notice the other Jeep in time as I suddenly notice them waving as they pass by & it is just too late by then to return the wave. Then I feel like a snot but it just happens once every great while even though it's completely unintentional.

Found my answer I was looking for on a 3year old thread. I love this forum. Went to store to by rear wheel cylinders and other parts for brake job and guys asked does it have ABS? I stood there like ahhhhhhhhhh don't know. Will have to find out. Now I know it does not.
