Just recently got a Jeep, need some advice please.
So, I've been lurking on here for awhile and any time I read something about something I want to do to my Jeep, it seems kind of like an information overload.
I want to lift my jeep, I was thinking about 4-ish inches. But from what I was reading any lift above 3'' would be advised to get a SYE, not necessary but it would help. Short arm vs Long arm lifts. I want to run 35's but again read that that could cause problems, may have to regear etc etc.
I'm probably not going to do much rock crawling, more mudding, and mostly commuting. So I wasn't sure which lift everyone would suggest, or if I get a lower suspension lift and a body lift etc. any advice would help a lot.
Please kind of put a description of what and why you are suggesting something, or even better a link so I could read about it.
My jeep is pretty stock at the moment. Just changed out the fender flares but that's it. Thanks for all the help!
Ok so there is A LOT that can be discussed on the many things you brought and most of it has been discussed over and over. You can get a lot our of searching the forums, some use Google since the search function on the site is a little iffy. Some more information from you would also help.
Year, Engine, Transmission, Rear differential, and budget would help in making sure you get the knowledge you need.
35s do take a lot to build properly for and long arms arent a necessity. I would look into the Zone 4.35in lift that is 3in of spring and 1.25in of body lift for a great price. This could reduce the risk of needing to do the SYE/Driveshaft upgrade but since Jeeps vary you may still need to to.
My suggestion is to keep researching just as you are until you are confident in making decisions. There are lots of different approaches depending on $$$. Just keep in mind that "cheap and reliable" with 35's isn't going to all of sudden happen. My buddies with 35's are constantly chasing the next weakest link.
When we bought a new Rubi Unlimited in 2006 and began off-roading in Arizona and Southern Utah we were very impressed with the abilities of the stock jeep with LT245-75R16 tires. After a few descents of dry waterfalls with the stock gas tank skid and rear bumper banging down on every ledge and rock I decided to install a 4 1/2 inch Rubicon Express long-arm lift with the rear tri-link suspension.
Although my wife had some nightmares while I was sawing off the supension on a new Jeep I finished the job and I was very impressed with the new ride and body clearance. We tried it out on some SW Arizona trails and washes and I decided not to rush into bigger tires and gear changes. I did install 1 1/4 wheel spacers to gain a wider footprint for increased stability. Although the 245's often require some differential steering we have been a lot of places and have really enjoyed the trips. A 245 with some air in it probably raises the diff as much as an extremely aired-down 33 when you come to think about it.........
They are cheaper, still very capable and require less modification to the Jeep to be run reliably. I currently run 33s and have plans to go to 35s but I am doing mine is phases. Once the 33s are worn or the D35 I also have breaks then I will be looking for 35s and some new axles.
