Just when I thought I got a good deal...

I picked up my tj about 2 months ago now, i drove 75 miles and paid $8500 for a 4.0l 5spd, 140k miles lifted a total of 6 inches (4inch RC suspension and 2inch BL) sitting on 36x13.5r16s. It came with a hard top, full doors, tube doors, bikini top, and a rain cover...

(I just put on the bumpers and winch)

now don't get me wrong i love my jeep, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it (its a jeep so of course that means yet haha) but after looking on this forum and seeing what people pay for these jeeps kinda has me pissed. In my area you can hardly find a jeep YJ for less then $5000 stock, stock tjs go for $9000 easy (i am on craigslist multiple times a day), and im reading about guys who are paying $5-6k for decent TJs.

So I guess what I am trying to see is, is there anyone else out there that lives in an area that just because it is a JEEP and the top comes off people think that they are made of gold?

Price is VERY dependent on location. Thats why even KBB will ask for zip when giving you a price on a vehicle. Not much you can do except try to buy on autotrader or ebay and buy something farther from where you live.

Just remember, the grass isn't always greener on the other side. That good deal you might have missed out on might have been someone trying to get rid of all their problems.
You got a nice rig bro, go out and enjoy it.

Expensive here in Oregon. I paid $18,500 last year for my 2005 TJ in very good condition with 39000 miles. It was the best price I could find after 4 months shopping.....

doesn't sound like that bad of a deal to me. Tennessee is relatively high on jeeps. you can find a deal every once in a while. i'm looking for one now.

Here in MA I have found 97-00 TJ's in the $3500-$7000 range, and '01-'03's are $6000-$12000 range... Really seems to depend on dealer or private party, and engine and whether stick or auto. the lower end of the price scale are always SE's with a 2.5, also the auto's seem to me much cheaper, must be less demand.

It makes me feel a little better knowing that I am not the only one out there that getting duped haha one good thing is that with it being lifted there are so many people out here that think its worth $5k more cuz it has big tires, that if I am ever FORCED to sell it i wont lose any money. I dont plan to sell it anytime this decade though

I dont even bother looking at dealers here, they are absolutely ridiculous. when i was looking for TJs a dealer had a 99, soft top, 4.0L 5spd bone stock with 150k miles and they were asking $12,000. I dont know what they ended up selling it for, but I do know that it was sold within two weeks of it arriving at the dealership

Used car prices in general are pretty high now. I am surprised by how high Jeeps are going here. St. Louis is usually a pretty conservative market for anything. I bought our 2005 LJ for my son over two years ago. It was as clean as it gets and only had 15,000 miles on it. I picked it up for $15,000 and I think the owner was happy to get that. Now after two years and a total of 26,000 miles, I think I could get $17K or even higher under the right circumstances. This info keeps my son on his toes, because he knows if he screws up, I can sell it at a profit

Just look at it this way. If you had bought that Jeep in stock condition at book value, you would not have been able to build it to what it is now for 8.5. So I would consider it a good deal.

Paid 17.5k for my loaded 2005 sport with a hard top, soft top, and a D44 with 32,000 miles. That was cheaper than KBB and NADA.

Central Texas Jeep prices tend to be high, but my 98 has not a spec of rust. The one benifit of never getting any rain.

I got lucky here in Mass. One of the nurses I work with sold me her '99 stock with soft top, 45,000 miles and I got it for $5,000. The only thing I had to put into it was a new soft top!!!!

I feel your pain! I'm up the road in Yakima, bought my '98 last fall for $7500. It has a 3.5 inch Rubicon lift and 33'' BFGs.

Pretty much a PNW thing, Seattle is worse!

got mine in ID, 2000 5 speed 120k miles for 10k. found out after joining WF that i have the D44 rear, guess i got lucky with that one. Any 4X4 in ID is over priced.

Florida is pretty high too. Hot my 02 YJ bone stock with 27000 miles for 12,900 a year ago. Now similar jeeps I'm seeing for $15000 +.... Not sure what's going on.

it just depends on the deal you find i got mine for hella cheap. it has a 3.5 suspension it has ugly chrome tubes on it. and it had 33x12.5x15s with fair tread. nothing wrong with the jeep in good condition with 67k for about 7400

Sounds as if I may be a lucky one. A guy made me a 10000 dollar offer on my 01 Tj with 150k. I only paid 6500 for 3 yrs ago. Turned around the same day bought a 02 blacked out Tj with 75k miles 4 inch bds lift 33x12.50 17 nitto mud grapplers pro comp wheels, rugged ridge front and rear bumpers, winch and roof rack for the same price. Of course cash money from my sell was a deciding factor of bringing the price down from 12k.

i got my 97 4.0L with 140k

for only $3300

but i needed entire new suspension and i put $1800 into it. rather do it that way tho and know that its new and good to go, then buy something for 5-6k that the guy says is good and upto date only to find problems later. My sense tho is that i still overpaid by a little bc the body and interior are pretty banged up (no radio, dirty dash, and a/c that doesnt work)

I got a good one for this thread... I searched for about a month on Autotrader and any other site I could find for a Jeep that met my specifications. I found one in TX just north of San Antonio for 12k, only issue is that I live in NY so I spoke with the dealer and asked if they would do a straight up trade for an 09 Toyota Corolla with 30k miles and a factory warranty. They agreed and after some info was traded off I went solo 3600 miles round trip to get my 02 TJ with 70k miles.

I wouldn't recommend it for everyone but to me it was well worth it.

I got an 04 Rubi in IL with 117k miles for 12k. The best deal available in my area. Totally worth it IMO

I'm content with the deal I got on mine.

2000 Sport, 5-speed, D44, 78k, bone stock never offroad. FL car entire life, no rust all. Dirty with, well... dirt, just not cleaned too often and made it look a lot worse than it was (close to mint when cleaned up).. All maint done, nice fluids everywhere I checked, clean air filter, etc. Listed for 9,500 I believe, offered 7500 and drove it away for 7800.

When I first thought, hey I'll get a 99ish wrangler.. I expected them to be about 4k-5k in good condition with a 6 cyl LOL. I don't mind that I paid more though, (even though book is close to 10,000 to my surprise), because I know I can sell it for profit if I ever wanted to

edit, don't know why I went off about my Jeep... my point is that as long as you paid the amount that they're going for in your area, don't feel bad... you'd get your money back if you wanted to
