Back in 1963 my first Jeep was a CJ3A and I drove it for two years with no top in Sacramento, Ca. Didn't even own a top for it. Just drove it.

My next Jeep, a 1974 CJ5 had a top but I seldom used it.

Now I am a lot older and have a 2005 TJ and I keep to top on most of the time because I am now on a first name basis with my dermatologist and I can even spell melanoma.

Two lessons.... wear sun screen and don't play scrabble with me.

Wow, some of you jumped all over me for wanting to keep my jeep stock and you are all getting bent out of shape because some stranger has the top up ???

I LOVE having the ice cold air blowin' in my face with the jeep all zippered up on July afternoons cruising the backroads of the mojave desert. In fact I might try to disable the zippers so they don't accidently unzip.

And I'm checking into getting heated seats for those cold December trips....

Dang this thread grew quick! The point is, you bought this vehicle with the knowledge the top and doors come off and its a selling point, but it seems some dont ever use that feature and I see no point. At all, thats like all of these rich people. Im going to buy this car, so I can hire someone to drive me around. Stupid

But there are always excuses and reasons to have the top off but on a beautiful day who wouldnt?

For the record Indy, my top DOES come off and I agree it's one of the cool things about owning a jeep.

But no one knows where others are coming from or going to. Heck, maybe they're on a three day road trip to Moab, and the top will come down when they get there...

Well, I guess I must be one of the "stupid" ones since I can't seem to take my top off when some of the other members here think I should.
First off, it's my choice if I want to take the top off, doors, off, etc. or If I want to leave my top on and run the A/C or have the windows down. I really would like for another Jeeper to pull up beside me and call me "stupid" for not having my top off, I honestly do.

Now that I'm done with the rant.

I remove mine when I want to, when the weather permits, when I have time to enjoy it, and when I'm not taking the kids to school. Taking it off just to ride to work and letting it sit all day in the parking lot just doesn't make much sense to me if I've got to reassemble it that evening when I get home. I don't have a garage so it sits exposed. no problem usually but I don't like my interior to get wet if it rains or any cat to climb in and spray the interior. again, my choice. If the weather is going to be nice for several days and I've got time to ride around, yeah, it's coming off and staying off.

I think many people have experienced trying to assemble the older tops on Wranglers in the evening, not alot of fun once the top get's cool.

To each his own though.

I take the top of on occasion but I never take the doors off. Because I'm often aways from home and if it starts raining i can just put the top up...but won't have doors... I'm thinking about getting a trail cover, because I hate always putting the top up if it is going to rain.

This is the one I'm looking at...

All Things Jeep - All Weather Trail Cover for Wrangler, 97-06, #81037
I just bought that one, but haven't gotten to use it yet because the weather got too nasty to go topless right after it came. Shop around though- that price is a little high. I paid $125 at Quadratec.

While i normally have my top down at all times, there are indeed instances where it is not good.

Try sitting in rush hour traffic on an extremely hot / humid day on your way to a meeting with a high level executive at the office - at an office where you do not have the ability to refresh yourself or change when you get there... This situation is more common than you think - happens to me a lot.

The only difference is, on those days I don't drive my Jeep at all because of the lack of AC. I assure you if I had AC, I would most certainly be driving it with the top up and ac on.

Everyone has something different going on - just because you see something that doesn't jive with what you are doing at the time doesn't mean that that person is stupid or has no reason for what they are doing.

I love my job too much to show up all sweat stained and crappy for a meeting with the bosses, and I really never want to drive a car again, so my options are limited.
But then again, what do I know.. I'm stupid.

I paid a little less than that for the same cover for my 06 Unlimited. Try 4wheelparts.com. They offer the same cover to fit your Jeep for 128.99.

Top OFF in Las Vegas

Moved to Las Vegas 5 years ago and have had numerous CJ's and Wrangler's in the past. I always said that if I got a Jeep here, the top would be off, with only a binkini top to protect from the hot sun. Three weeks ago, I bought a 92 Wrangler-- not bad, but was kinda "needy". Cracked head, main seal, clutch kit, several gaskets, all had to be addressed, but after adding about 2000.00 to do the work, it runs like a dream. Came with a hard top and hard 1/2 doors, but those came off as soon as my bikini top arrived. Winter here is in the 50's, so I may be able to leave it off totally. A trail cover may be the answer to the occasional rain storms we have here.
Now all I need is to figure a way to carry the 33" spare without bending the rear tailgate hinges!

many a jeeps were running topless...but not me.

I even got my windows tinted on Sunday.

I wanted to bring 773's post back up because it's the most important one of this trivial debate.

I also drove my previous 2 jeeps around SoCal without the tops when I was in my 20's and now I'm being reminded of it everytime I visit my dermatologist. So take it from us oldtimers. Wear hats and sunscreen.

And 773, I can spell "actinic", so I could hold my own against you in scrabble..

That's hilarious, b/c I tried editing my post to say
Some days its too damn hot...I'm not 18 anymore, and I've gained some sense over the years.

Guess 773 didn't hear the latest on many sunscreens on the market....

Jesus christ, I can see alot of the people here have panty issues.

Did I say you have to take the top off? This is my opinion and I'll think what I want. I know there are instances, I've done it we all do, but when I have any chance I can I take the doors and back and side windows off. I keep the top top on for reasons of burning in the sun so I get that. I'm not telling anyone what to do or what they should do but yes, I find it stupid when on a saturday or sunday on a beautiful day you would have the top up windows closed and AC on. Go buy a liberty.

I'll take the time to take my doors and sides off for a trip to the store, why? Because it takes a whole 3 minutes to do it. Its not rocket science and its not hard, and when it gets dark, ill put it back on in the same amount of time. I watch the weather and check it while im out on my phone for rain, if it rains oh well my stuff is rhinolined and the top part will be on which will keep alot out. I work in a warehouse from 3-1130 at night. I dont see much daylight, so when I drive to work I have the top off. I could never ever wear a suit.

.02 cents for all you that think im forcing you to take your top off. Do what you want, I'm enjoying my jeep, with the open air hitting me in the face.

Pokey, do you really care if Indy, and vanimal think something or someone is stupid?? I don't think they're opinion is really that important, and probably you shouldn't either...

Make a flawed blanket statement about a group of people, and you should expect there to be some blowback.
