Largest tire size to fit factory spare holder

Guys my TJ came with factory 30's on 15" rims. Will 31's fit into that tire holder? The rear break lite looks close already to the 30's.

Thanks

A 31 will fit with no extension. I ran that for 3 years on the stock carrier.

If it seems like a problem, take the four bolts out of the third brake light and put a stack of fender washers between the carrier and light to the height you need. The bolts are long so you'll have no problem. 10 minute fix

I had a 33 on mine and the third brake light was still visible over it. That would be the biggest tho, it was just barely visible.

I recently put 32" tires on my TJ. No problem with the spare tire holder and brake light clearance.

I just had to replace my stock carrier after running a 33" spare on it for about six months. I noticed my spare was hanging at a weird angle, looked a little closer and saw that the mounting plate had ripped almost all the way off. But yes, you could still see the third light, but the stock carrier won't hold up for long.

If you have proper length on the rubber spacers that press against the tire, you shouldn't have any problems. They should all press firmly against the tire when it is bolted down, spreading the weight evenly around the gate.

I've had a 33x12.5 for 6 years on the stock carrier. You MUST have the rubber snubbers tight against the tire.

I must be too cautious then, because I went to mount 32's this past weekend and it looked it wouldn't fit at all, so I rigged something up and it still looks like it barely clears it. They are M/T tires, so the tread is kinda beefy on them, not sure if that makes a difference

You could see the light over my 33 but I have since made a led for the center of the spare.

I've got a snugged up 33 on my stock carrier. I wish I had a picture but I made an aluminum extension bracket for the third brake light to raise it up to a comfortable height; really simple and stock wiring was sufficient length when re-routed.

I want to run BFG KM2 33x12.5 so I got a RR extender, what a waste of money. It sets the wheel about 3" further back which will put way too much stress on the door. I can't just use the standard carrier as the tire hits the bumper and the third brake light so I'm thinking I might use parts from the RR extender and knock something up myself. Has anyone done a diy mod to fit a 33" spare
