31x10.5x15. Mine rubbed a little when I turned it full one way or the other but I fixed that by adding washers at the steering stop. Now I dont have any rubbing at all. Here is my 97 with 31's.

I'll sell you my Canyons with 31's on them if you're interested.... They are still like new treadwise, but they are an A/T tire.

This is what they look like clean...

That's so funny. I saw your first picture and thought it was my Jeep. Took me a split second to realize that it wasn't. Sorry, it's been a long day.

I had 33'sX12.5X15 on my 97 Tj. Didnt rub at all because my 15" rims had really good spacing. I dont rock crawl at all....remember that. All my driving was roads and mudding. So if you're not crawling, throw some 33's on there. They are BFG A/T's by the way.
I have since put a 4" Skyjacker lift on and it makes the 33's look small.

Not to be a dick or "bash" a more seasoned member, but was this necessary? Did this provide any helpful knowledge to this thread? I'm genuinely trying to learn, and you aren't helping. I appreciate the attempt at a laugh, but I feel this is out of place.

Totally depends on the backset of the rim you are running.....my 31's didn't rub at all no matter what I did (Goodyear MT/R's)

Calm down man this is a discussion forum. Relax. If you don't like a post, move on.

@lance - I bet that's not stock suspension and gearing tho.

Petersen's 4Wheel and Off-road had a listing for various trucks, back in 2005 or thereabouts, called "What Bumps and What Tucks", which suggested max. tire sizes versus stock/suspension lift as follows:
For the 97-05 TJ/LJ:
32x11.50 - Stock Height
33x12.50 - 3" Suspension Lift
34x11.00 - 4" Suspension Lift
35x12.50 - 4" Suspension Lift
36x14.50 - Major Fender Cutting and 6" Suspension Lift
37x12.50 - Major Fender Cutting and 6" Suspension Lift
38x14.50 - Major Fender Cutting and 8" Suspension Lift

If you READ the OP's question, you will notice he asks "what is the largest tire I can put on my 97 without adding lift". He did not say with no other mods, or as cheap as possible, or on my stock rims, or without changing a lot of other items. I appreciate the people saying 31s or 32s, but in all reality, with a large budget, you CAN Fit 42s on a stock height Jeep Wrangler.

Asking "what is the largest tire I can fit" is like asking "what is the best upgrade for more power for my Jeep". I would answer that with 502 Ramjet and a supercharger. Common answers are not the ONLY correct ones. If that were the case, if I asked "what is the largest tire I can fit on a 6" lift", I would not be running 39s. I would be running 35s or 37s(the most common answer).

So in closing, I hope you learned something now. Think outside of the box sometimes. It helps innovation and the progression of the sport. If I am not helping people "learn", maybe it is because they are not WILLING to learn. I was not trying to be funny, just presenting an optional idea.

I rest my case. 5 years ago, this was gospel, now it is obsolete data in 2010 with the new thinking and creative design and problem solving.

I know guys running 39s and 42s on 2" of lift, and guys running 42s on 4" of lift. It is called Low Center of gravity(LCG).

Here's a November 2008 Version of the above.

Wow, didn't mean to start a fight. Sorry, I should have presented my question more clearly. Unfortunately, I'm pretty much an idiot when it comes to Jeeps, so I guess I don't know how to ask questions the right way!

Gotta go for Jeep ride - it's 80 and sunny in Indy....

u can get a 3/4" or so coil spring spacer from nearly any parts house and stick it under the front and it won't make a huge difference, and should keep it from rubbing. i've seen a lot of them stock with 31's main thing is rim offset.

So does original thought and an ability to be different.

As for "common sense", why be common when you can build extraordinary. Guess "common" is good enough for some.

All I meant was the OP had a question, and sense that everyone *should* have (common sense) would tell you the OP wanted to know what rubber he could buy and put on his truck without further modification. Is the answer you gave an answer you'd want to get if you were as inexperienced as the OP? Have some responsibility. Offer knowledge that helps. Everyone starts at the beginning, and telling him he can run 42's on his truck is foolish. We both know it.

I'm not condoning "extraordinary" thinking. I'm saying pull your head out of your ass and realize that most people aren't building the best, biggest, newest ride out there...yet. How about offer useful information, then put out your "hey, I can stuff 42's under my truck cuz I hacked the hell out of shit to make it work." Start by crawling, don't start with running.
