jdhallissey, My point is that having all 4 wheels on the ground doesn't seem as important as having the traction (Lockers.) What good does a tire do all flexed out and touching the ground if it's only putting 3# of pressure on the ground it's touching?
Yea -- Lockers are VERY important to this equation. It is funny in some of the cases were I have gotten stupid tipsie that one tire just touching that rock enough from keeping me from going over. That is why this is always a great debate.

Of coarse lockers are better but....even locked with one tire off could mean not enofe traction.

Think of this...open diff axles.....one wheel off the ground. Tire off the ground gets all the power....just spinning...if that tire was on the ground....

4 tires produce more traction than 3 plan and simple.

jdhallissey, Hey, last time I wheeled with Larry at Anza Borrego (SoCal M&G #1), I left to go back to Redondo Beach with what I thought was plenty of fuel to make it to the next town. Well, the next friggin' town in the direction in which I was heading was FOREVER away and I coasted in to the pump on just FUMES. So I won't make TOO much fun of you....

I'm looking at putting a Detroit locker in my 8.8 or maybe a full spool. The front will be an ARB.

This old guy is going to bed. Keep throwing your opinions into the mix and I'll check on this thread first thing in the morning. I want as many opinions as I can get on this issue. Good or bad, let me know what you think.

Fo-sho. This is the best thread sence Chadwick dunked his junk in the lake.

The defining factor for me going LCG is that I have about 2.5" of clearance when I back into the garage as I sit now when the hard top is on... No big lifts for me.

that would be pretty sweet dirt.

im a pretty big fan of the LCG rigs. but thats also cause they fit in parking garages better then a rig with 8 inches of lift. and what self respecting jeep owner would make it so their jeep could not park in the parking garages at the mall

The look of the LCG Jeep is killer, I love how mean they stand... but they just do not perform on the rocks out west very well. Yes, they'll get where they want, but they will probably scrape everything getting there.

I'm with Josh on this, 4-5.5" of lift is plenty. Any more and you sit too high and have too much flex. He and I have both wheeled with Jack and his friends on separate occasions, and they really can do just about anything with this set up.

My plans:
4.5" Long Arm Lift
1.25" BL
D44 Front
D60 Rear
37's
TNT Tube fenders front
TNT fenders rear (extended)
98-99" wheelbase

I plan on being able to drive my rig where I want and the comp cut stuff just isn't to my taste on a street driven rig. I'll push the wheel wells back some with the small stretch.

Back east where most of the wheelin' is mud and uphill, an LCG will definitely help, but on the rocks, you need a bit more belly clearance. So this setup is a "best of both" type, with a 4" lift being on the low side and larger tires than necessary.

So my 5+" of lift with long arms and high clearance fenders at all four corners and 37s should get me about anywhere I want to go. Locked at both ends of course.

Ok so I am kind of in the middle right now. I am currently running a 2.5" lift, with a 1.25" BL and flat fenders showing up this week. I plan on eventually swapping axles and gears and putting 35's on this setup. Eventually though, when the jeep becomes a toy, I would like to run at least a 4" LA. But for now I plan on keeping it more LCG.

I'm sitting on Clayton 4" SA lift and I'm making my way there as well.

Next up will be:
Clayton LA
TNT Hy-Line Front and Rear Extended corners.
RCV Front axle shafts and alloy rears and then either 35' or 37's.
Gearing wise I think I'll be going with 5.13's to cover that range of tires sizes, 35-37's.

I plan on going 39's or 40's but I'm in the process of hunting down D60's as well. If I find a pair I will probably make the jump faster.

This is Webster Pass here in Colorado.
Do you want:
a) a low center of gravity
b) high ground clearance and floppy springs
c) a really heavy passenger

I have wheeled with Jack(Hickman) in AZ a bunch. That being said, he runs 5.5" RK lift with a 10" WB stretch like I do(104"). He runs 37" Comp Claws, and I just stepped up to 39" Reds with the same 5.5" lift. I am also stretching the front out 7", to 111" total WB with over 90* approach and departure angles. I consider my rig a fairly LCG rig. It is super flexy, and is actually very stable to about 50* lean. That is where it gets tippy. No sway bars(those have not been metioned here) F/R either. Spool in the rear D60, new Spartan locker in the front D60. 4 to 1 t-case, and 5.89 gears. I will be swapping in an auto very soon too.

The AZ rocks(and a lot of other areas too), do not act friendly to a stock height Jeep, even if you stuff 40s on it. Too much hangs down still, and the rockers will hang on everything. Approach and departure angles are critical to the big stuff to, so a WB stretch is imperitive to help eliminate hanging up on everything, or even being able to get TO the obstacle.

Is this LCG enough?

Still flexes just fine. The weight transfer is very smooth and predictable too.

Jack's rig is showroom quality compared to mine. We run the same stuff, and wheel together a lot. Although I did just replace my grill, and on my third hood now(actually my fourth, but the one on it now was the original).
