Leaky rear main seal

I might be trading my xj for a tj with a leaky rear main seal he said it leaves no mark in the drive way and only leaks half a quart in between oil changes.
I know it would cost about 1000 dollars to get a new rear main but I'm wondering if I can just leave it or will it get worse?
Let me know thanks

i have a 2000 with 175 that has a leaky rear main. it's been like that for a long time now, it's not even noticeable on the dipstick. it hasn't really gotten any worse, and i'm not going to fix it until the clutch gets fixed.

Mine is a 2000 too and it has a leaky rear main. It has not really gotten better or worse. It drips a couple drops each night, but that is it. Unlike your XJ the TJ has a two piece rear main seal, but not on all years. Someone will have to chime in on your year. The parts to fix the two piece rear mains seal are only like $30.

Fairly simple job to do at home. Little time consuming though if you have to drop the exhaust to get the oil pan down. About the only special tool you'd need is a torque wrench. Everything else is just basic hand tools. You'll find a bunch of write-ups on the web telling you exactly how to do it.

It's just a messy job.
