Legal to drive w/o side mirrors in CT? And yet another soft top question...

It has been mentioned here before that it isn't legal in some states to drive without the side mirrors when the doors are removed. Does anybody know what the regulations in CT are? I couldn't find anything...

Also: A while back I posted a question about a soft top and someone recommended to look into the Viking Top. It's not the cheapest, but the concept is pretty cool. Does anybody have any experience with those?

As always: Thanks for your responses

Here is a link to the Viking Top

I looked for regulations in WV and couldn't find any so I broke down and bought a cheap set if mirrors. I can leave the new brackets mounted and just remove the new mirror so I never have to remove the factory mirrors from the doors. They were $35 from quadratec.

In PA you have to have a driver's side mirror. The passenger side is optional. However if you have both driver and passenger mirrors, then you don't need a rearview mirror. Which is good for me since mine fell off last year and I haven't bothered to put it back on yet. Well, I tried once, but it fell right back off.

Actually, the Viking Top can be a good economical solution to someone with only a hard top, since it doesn't require the purchase of the frame components. Just the door surrounds and a header channel, which can usually be found pretty cheap on ebay.

Last time I checked here in Texas all that is required is 1 mirror on the windshield (In Texas that is). Although I will probably get a set of relocation brackets for my mirrors simply for safety sake.

When I was looking for the laws here I found some Police officer forums and even they had different answers and nothing definite about what was required.

You might want to check with a Jeep club in your area, they should be knowledgable about the laws pertaining to jeeps in your state.

Here's a list of a few clubs in CT I found on a quick search.

mirrors...

i know in tennesee that you are required to have one rear facing mirror. wether that one mirror is your rear-view mirror or one side mirror is up to you. this is the only one that i could find in my copy of the tca codes. you also have to check your city ordinances on traffic laws. i am a city officer and we use our own city codes to cite drivers into court as opposed to state traffic codes (we have a seperate city court just for traffic). each city or county could be different. on the other hand, like i have stated before, i dont know any officer that would actually stop you for this little violation. there are several codes in tenn. on how high your bumper can be from the ground, fender coverage, and off-raod light covers but they never get enforced.

I just installed my Viking top last weekend, and so far Iam very satisfied. Easy install, and the material and workmanship look great too. Scooby

Do you have any pictures of the viking top? Also, how easy is it to take the top all the way off and store it in the jeep? How does the slant of the rear window affect the rear passengers?

I know that was a lot of questions but I am interested in getting one. Thanks

Sorry, I do not have any pictures of the top on my Jeep, but they have some good pictures on the Viking site. I do not think that they designed this top to be taken off, yes you could if you wanted to, but I think that the goal was to give you full time safari top with the option of enclosing the vehicle with bad weather since the rear window and both of the side windows store on the top all of the time. I have not had the windows down since I installed the top, so I cannot give you a solid answer on how the slant affects the passengers. Scooby

Thanks for the info Scooby

I really like the top but I don't know if I want to sacrifice my easy top off option.

Thanks for this. I just ordered another set of mirrors, ones that I can leave the originals on the doors adn just attach these to the brackets, saving me time. I recieved them today but have not installed them.

I found a link on jeepforum.com about state codes and here is a link for CT, I havn't looked t over, hope it helps.
