i am looking to get a skyjacker 8 inch lift. i dont plan on rock climbing just some trailing. do i need the sye and extended driveshaft or will it be fine.thanks
What size tire do you want to run? Build around your tire size. What is your budget? Once you pass 33'' tires on a TJ you need to look at upgrading brakes, axles, etc.
i was going off my buddy who has a 6 inch lift with a 3 inch body and 36s he doesnt have any sye or extended driveshaft just a 4.88 gear in a dana 35 and his does fine. i have a dana 44 and was looking to run 37s but i wasnt sure if i needed the sye and drivshaft to just use as a daily driver
Anything over a 3.5-4" and you'll probably need an SYE, longer driveshaft, and adjustable control arms. Depends on the lift brand... Zone lifts up to 4" don't normally need them, but I hear higher end lifts that tend to underestimate the actual amount of lift you get usually need them around 3-3.5".
8" lifts are supposed to clear 40s. Dana 44 would struggle with 37s and the Dana 30 would hate life. 37s, your looking in to the hp30/8.8 with 31spln cromos. That's the smallest axles I'd run with 37s. Even then if you beat on them, you could break stuff. I believe 37s take 5.13 gears. Might as well do 1 tons at that point. A sye is a must after 2.5" lift with a double cardon shaft. Adjustable uppers for pinion angles. Then your going to need bigger brakes, heavy duty steering, and a whole mess of parts. 37s arnt cheap to run. I'd go with a nice 6" long arm and run 35s. All you would need is the sye and cromos for the Dana 30 wouldn't hurt.
I'm pretty sure I saw a mall crawler with that lift a couple weeks ago! LOL..
But really though, you should keep your jeep as low as possible for a given tire size. You want 35's , then go with a 3.5-4" lift with a 1" body and 1" motor mount lift. This will help minimize the case drop you will need. But to be clear you should really do a sye and cv drive shaft.
For a 35" tire you should also upgrade to zj v8 tie rods, bigger brakes and a durango steering box. Also the front axle should be ok as long as you don't put a locker in it, but an upgrade to a hp30 would be money better spent when regearing.
I know it can be easy to think " I should go bigger", but this is almost never true and 8" should be banned allong with body lifts over 1.25" . Just remember function is what matters most .
Ok guys I already have a 4 inch rough country with the transfer case drop bracket. What is bad about the drop? And also I heard body lifts are a bad way to go. I drove my buddys jeep and it felt awesome to drive being so high. I wanna feel like that driving mine lol so if I was to just put 35s and a body lift would it be the same?
Body lifts are fine as long as you don't go over 1.25". Anything more is foolish! Take a look at good lifts like a clayton long arm, or aev. Do you see any 8" lifts! There is a good reason for it. 8" lifts are made to mall crawl with 22" spinners and chrome everything, not to use offroad!
Definitely sye and cv shaft. Do you have adjustable control arms on? I would definitely not Ho higher than 4. Get a tummy tuck, some highline renders, gears, 35s and call it a day. Keep that center of gravity low!
If the purpose of the lift is to increase ground clearance, allow for larger tires and increase articulation then the transfercase drop totally defeats the lift. You can put on bigger tires and you will get more flex but your ground clearance and breakover angles suffer greatly.
If the purpose of the lift is to look good and sling mud from the local pit then by all means drop the transfercase.
Go measure the distance from the ground to the bottom of your transfercase. I have a 2.5" lift and a UCF Ultra High Clearance transfercase skid and mine measures 17.5".
