Lift and tire questions

Here is the situation, I have an 04 rubicon that is stock and I would like to lift it and add bigger tires. But, with gas prices where they are, I have a hard time spending thounsands on a good lift and tires if I'm gonna pay more at the pump. So, I would like to know why lifted jeeps tend to get worse gas mileage than stock ones if they have been regeared? Does tire weight hurt?

This is what I would like to do: get a full traction long arm lift (4" or 6") and get some of those narrow TSL's (34x9.50-15LT). These tires are relatively light. Rubicons come with 4.11 gears so I'm not worried about that, but with this combo what kind of MPG's can I expect?

Width and weight hurt mpg, increased height helps some gearing and hurts others.

The width greatly increases rolling resistance...if you went with those narrow tires, mpg may actually increase during cruising...

I just went from 33 12/50 to 35 12.50 and my mpg increased.

I think it will be a better combo, not sure on the look...I would love a 35/11.50 to help with resistance

I only run 3.73 now and it works well for me...

I have not noticed a difference in mileage since I lifted mine. However, I am not looking that hard. The more I hear about global warming the more I want to fail smog tests. By the way... Mars has a 95% Co2 atmosphere. We have something like .0035%. Mars is freezing most of the time.

Lifted jeeps usually get worse mpg, do to having more mass higher vs stock.. thus more air hits a bigger target, add bigger heavier tires control arms bumpers etc... I got about 13-14 mpg in my 00 with 35's 5" lift and 4.56's gears. As for the 9.50 tires, I would not get them with a large lift, as it may make the jeep unstable both on road and off.

iv got a 2004 wrangler with a 4" lift, 35x13.50's and 4.56 gears and i get between 16 and 18mpg depending on how i drive it

Got an 01 Wrangler with 35/12.5 and a 6in long arm kit with 4.88's..I get about 15 mpg but it's not my daily driver either... but def wouldnt mind hearing some tips on how to improve my gas mileage.. Just replaced my spark plugs and wires thinking that would help..

Jeepin4life-your is a 4cyl also-right?

I get 15-16 consistently with 6cyl and 35s and 3.73. Mostly in town averaging about 50mph with very little stop and go. I got about 14.5 -15 with the 33s. I only had jeep without a lift for 2 or 3 tanks of gas. Hated those trailer tires and got stuck day after purchase....wife said something about hair on my ass and then we were stuck 2 minutes later.

Suggestions on getting better milage? Delete that 1000 pound bumper

The thing is: Jeeps are bricks on wheels. They are not designed to get good milage. I'm afraid it is the price we pay to be cool

Seriously tho, stick with the standards. Keep tire pressure up, change your oil, keep your air filters clean, etc. There is no silver bullet to getting better MPG. If there were, everybody would be running it.

Yah mines a 4cyl..hate saying that..but yah if i hadnt just bought a new house i'd be putting a small block in it right now..yah i know my priorities are all jacked up hahah!

depends how you drive it and where you drive it but i used to drive mine to college 15 miles away which is almost all highway. At 60 mph my jeep would cuize with like ~2500rpm. Now i have 35s and no gears.. all i did was add a lift and tires and now my rpm is ~1800 rpm and i'm getting better mpg than before. Also before my tires with my mods, cold air intake, catback exhaust and a bored throttle body i did get better mpg than stock.

Currently i go 240miles before the light turns on and i fill up on average of 15.5-16 gallons. I have not corrected my speedo so its counting slower so when i do correct it i'm guessing i'd be getting 17% better.. (using circumference ratios of my new tires vs my old tires)

You def have a good point there..on the Highway mine is tacking about 2500RPM's going about 60-65 and if i get up into the 70-75 (going down hill, with a good wind behind me) It'll take close to 3 grand

if you go to intercotire.com, you can see the narrow super swampers I am talking about

I want to get a lift but gas in my area is now over 4 dollars a gallon and its not going down soon...

do they make speedo gears for if you have 34" tires? and for a rubicon transfer case? anyone know where I could find one?

I believe a 30 gear is what you need warpman, thats what i ordered since no one has the 29 tooth gear i need for my 35s. plus my 35s measure around 34 in real life. If you look at the chart, 31 tooth is for 33s and 29 is for 35s so 30tooth should be for 34s
