Got a BDS 3" lift on my 2001 TJ. Now I'm trying to decide on the next step. Tires/wheels.
The place I went to quoted me $1800 for a set of 5 33x12.5x17 Procomp Extreme MT2's with black steel wheels. Searching around, that seems to be a decent deal...I think. Are Procomp good tires? Is steel a good choice. Totally new with all of this.
If you go with 15" it'll be cheaper.
Most places I've looked online (4wd, extreme terrain, discount tire direct) you can find a set of 5 good a/t or m/t tires and aluminum wheels for around that price.
Personally I wouldn't buy steel wheels. (Mine came with steel wheels when I bought it) but eventually will be replacing them with aluminum.
You should be able to get the same offset choices with a 15" wheel, maybe more, that you can get with a 17" wheel. I bought five 33x10.50 -15 BFG KM2 and Black alum wheels with 3.75" back spacing for $1,847.00 from a local tire dealer in my area.
We have a few different Wheel and Tire Kits that will ship to you ready to bolt up for less than what you were quoted. I don't have any experience with Procomp tires, but the KM2's you can get in the kits on our site are a great on road and off road tire. We also have kits with Mickey Thompson tires and even Mud Claws.
Let me know if you see something you like and I'll get you a great price so you have something to compare to!
I just bought 5 35 X 12.50 Goodyear MTR's mounted and road force balanced on 5 new AR-23 15 x 8" American Racing alloy wheels from Tire rack for a total of $1657 shipped to my door.
OK, so Why would someone go 12.5 wide tire vs a 10.5" wide tire at 33"'s? Is there any benefit to either?
If I stick with my canyon rims and go 33" I will have to install spacers (at least 3.5" to 3.75") to push the tires out as not to rub when turning. Did I understand that correctly?
If I go with 17" rims, I will need new brakes?
So many questions! Thanks all for the info so far. It's fun learning as I go!
If you go to a 12.5" wide tire with either a 15" or a 17" rim, you will want 3.75-4" back space. The issue isn't the rim diameter, it's the tire width. Wider tires will rub your lower control arms at full lock if too much back space is used. Whether you use existing rims and spacers or aftermarket rims with correct back spacing, it doesn't really matter.
You won't need new brakes with 17" rims, but it will cost you more for rims and tires, and 15" x 8" rims are much better for off road for 33" tires.
Thanks Waterdog. Makes sense. So if I stick with my canyon rims (15x8) it sounds like a good low cost entry to 33's, provided I get the correct spacing. Is that something the shop installing the tires can typically do?
After running a couple different sets of steel wheels, I would stick to aluminum. Aluminum runs truer, and I don't have any of the balance and wobble problems I fought for years.
They are also lighter, and your brakes will work better. A little bit of weight savings goes a long ways there.
I'm still running 3 Procomp original Xtreme MT's, and one MT2. I shot a stick through their "Tri-Ply" sidewall, and all that was available for replacement was the MT2. The originals suck in deep snow. No offset lug pattern at the edges. The straight edge would just sit and spin in the groove. They fixed this with the MT2. Maybe they are better, but I'm not buying three more.
Procomp was not too helpful when I was getting my replacement. My production date stamp on the originals was past any kind of warranty, even though I didn't have them nearly that long, and they were still at 90% tread.
Make sure you check the production date stamp on ANY tires you buy. Time served sitting in a warehouse should not count to me, but it did to Procomp.
My next tire will be the Goodyear MTR/K.
Anywho, here is a MT2 on the passenger rear vs the MT1 up front. 35x12.5x15 on a 15x8 alloy wheel with 4"BS.
X2 on the advice to stick with aluminum wheels. I experimented switching from aluminum to steel 10+ years ago and it didn't go well, too many dents and bent steel wheels. I went back to aluminum.
ProComp's tires are something I have a lot of experience with since I worked for ProComp's parent company (Transamerica). I used a lot of ProComp tires to build custom lifted Jeeps and trucks and the universal complaint was rapid tire wear. My personal opinion on their sidewalls was that they were too thin to make me comfortable. In fact, my management tried to get me to run ProComp tires on my TJ but I refused, choosing to keep my stronger Goodyear MT/Rs.
With a 33”, I recommend a front brake upgrade. You’ll need a dual piston setup to regain your braking distant.
Find an empty road and try to brake from 60-0 or 45-0, you’ll be surprise on how long it take to stop with that tire. On a separate test, you can try pushing the brake pedal as hard as you can and you still won’t be able to lock up the front on dry pavement. Ideally you should be able to just about to lock up the wheel on good dry pavement. Stock TJ brake is just not designed for 33” tire.
In my personal opinion, the OE brakes are, with the right pads, fine for 33's. It's with 35's that the OE single-piston design becomes marginal and dual-piston calipers become recommended. I've run upgraded dual-piston calipers from Vanco/Black Magic Brakes on both of my TJs but in my opinion, they'd be an unnecessary/unwarranted expense for 33's or smaller.
At the most I'd recommend Black Magic Brakes pads for 33's which will make a nice braking performance improvement.
The 15" tires that are on her jeep now need replacing soon and she hates the chrome wheels anyway.. Not sure of the backspacing, etc but I've looked online and I can get spacer/adapters if needed. This would be semi temporary until she saves up for a lift and tires. I've never changed from one size wheel to another so I would welcome some feedback from you guys.
Have only had my very first Jeep a 2001 TJ a few months and want to change from 31 's by 10.5 to a 32 or 33 inch tyre. Have a 2 inch lift. What other mods are required. Will I run into any problems doing this as any advice would be most welcome
procomp 7031 and mickey thompson mtz baja, best tire I have ran and they clear mud amazing
