Lift kit advice

I know this has been asked before. I have a 1997 Jeep Wrangler with the 4.0l 5spd. I want to get a 4 in lift without having to do the SYE kit. So I think I have made up my mind on a 2-2.25 in suspension lift and a 2 in body lift. I am a noob to jeeps and have owned mine for a few months and want to lift it. It will be mainly road miles with the occasional offroading. So my thoughts are to get the previos stated lift along with 32x12x15 tires and a set of pacer or crager soft 8 black rims. Does anyone have any advice on the setup or a suspension kit to get?

I have the same set up on mine that was done when I bought it. The only thing I woudl say is your doing double the work by installing 2 kits. I would just do one and it woudld be a suspension.

Yea but with a 4in suspension lift i would need the SYE and do not want to install that right now.

I am thinking about going with the Rough Country combo kit that is 3.75 total lift (2.5" Suspension Lift + 1.25" Body Lift).

So wiht the Zone suspension lift you do not need a SYE? I thought with a lift kit over 3"s you need a SYE installed?

G*dd*mn, this question gets tedious.

You need an SYE with a lift, any lift. Jeep should have given you one from the factory, but they were being cheap. Accept it and move on. Even at zero inches of lift, it should be there so if you grenade your rear shaft you can drive home in front wheel drive instead of being stranded while your t-case pisses fluid on the ground.

Now you can kinda-sorta get around it with motor mount lifts or t-case drops or other bullcrap, but those solutions are crap, generally speaking. There is no magic here and Zone or BDS or Skyjacker haven't magically dreamed up what everybody else was missing and found a way around this.

You do not need more than a 2 inch suspension lift to run 32 inch tires and the OME kit is perfect for that application. You may have to drop the TC a bit if you get some vibrations or you can raise the motor mount a bit and leave the TC where it is supposed to be. If you go 4 inches of suspension lift you are asking for many more mods to go along with it. Do some research on here and you will find all the feedback regarding just about any lift.

I am leaning towards the Rough Country combo lift kit that has the suspension lift and body lift kit. So i dont have to do the SYE kit.

You do not need an SYE with every single lift. Anything OVER a 2" suspension lift will more than likely need an SYE but each Jeep is different. My 2" suspension lift works just fine without one and I wheel the crap out of it.

Couldnt you get away with a MML if your driveline has vibes with a 2-3" lift?

Don't waste your money on rough country. Buy a quality lift from a reputable company like rubicon express, BDS, or Old Man Emu. It's worth it in the end.

I have heard alot about BDS and OME havent heard much about rubicon though. Do you know anywhere that has one of those kits in the 2-2.5 suspense lift for a decent price?

What should i expect to pay for a 2.5 suspension lift kit with shocks and a 1.25 inch body lift? I saw on the BDS site that they have a 2" kit but it only comes with coil springs for $415.

I second the SYE and the steer clear of Rough Country. My RC lift is solid. Gives me great lift and has a FINE drop pitman arm. The rest? Jeep rides like a solid axle no springs.Yes it is THAT rough. BANG. I am trying to soften it by swapping shocks - - I already have non RC control arms (no change there)- Before long the only thing RC under my jeep will be the springs ... and if that dont get it OUT THEY COME TOO.

The SYE is your best bet...sure you can MML and TC drop around it.... but as stated, it is simply a workaround for a design issue that COULD have been prevented by the manufacturer.

My theory on that is this: If somebody makes and markets a commercially produced kit to retrofit your vehicle (V-8 conversion, 4x4 conversion for a van, SYE kit) You prolly should have offered it in the initial package.

I was told that the 3" kit needs a SYE kit and I dont have funds for SYE and lift. That is why I am cosidering a 2.5" suspension lift and a 1.25" body lift to avoid the SYE kit until I have the money to get the SYE kit.

are you going with a lift just for looks/fitting 32's or whatever you said.... or are you going for ground clearance and fitting your 32s on?
if youre going mostly just to fit the new tires on... zones 4" kit comes with a t-case drop... you won't need an sye for it... thats what i did, i would love to do some hard wheeling, but it's my daily driver... so the 4" kit is going to be just fine for my jeep, just need to get it installed... haha

About your lift experience

I know I'm a little late to the discussion, but if it's not already too late I'll make a small recommendation or two.

As you are fairly new to Jeeps and lifting them, may I suggest you take a look at the website: HappyTrails4WD.com

Sign up for the newsletter and ebook, How to build Your Jeep Blueprint.
It's a bit long, but has some really good ideas that should help you make some intelligent decisions about what you "really" want before spending a lot of money only to be disappointed.

These forums are a very good place to hear opinions, but you sometimes are getting suspect info.

My jeep is my daily driver with the occasional off roading. I mainly want it for looks but to also be able to fit some bigger tires.
