Light bar

I know there are a lot of threads about this but I couldn't find the answers I needed. I've seen light bars that mount at the top of the windshield not the bolts at the bottom, and I want to run 5 lights instead of 4. Any ideas?

Don't get a light bar if you go off road. The first branch that touches it and you'll mangle it and possibly the windshield, or at least rip a few lights off .

They're not legal to actually use on the road either - so it really doesn't do much for you.

If you really really want lights above your vehicle - get a cargo rack and put lights in that, or build an external roll cage to hide them in. That way it can handle the snags that they'll take.

I do off road, and quite a bit. I've thought about a cargo rack already. All the places I have been so far don't involve anything hitting my roof. I mostly wheel in the desert.

I know they're not legal on road, but that;s not where I'm lacking light either.

2 lights mounted on the windshield is more than enough. If not add some to the front bumper.

Got any photos of where you wheel rip? I know even the desert here has trees. Though they're skimpy - they're still enough to cause problems.

The only place I've been where that might be an issue, but I've only been once.

Man that's barren as a fixed dog. In that case - I guess it could work out for you; though remember that one time you wanna go somewhere where its not wide open you're at risk.

Sure but they're not cheap:

My guess is there's probably a cheaper rack out there that you could easily adapt to do the same thing.

That's the rack I saw that I liked but I'm not sure I want something that bulky on my rig. I'm planning on someday going to MOAB to ride the Lions Back.

How about what I'm hearing about reduced fuel mileage and the possibility of snagging?

(I know Jeeps get bad MPG but I don't want to unnecessarily kill it if I don't have to). I drive 80 miles round trip to work a day.

they are not great pics, they where taken by my phone. but it was all i had.

I have some low profile light, they let me see where i am going and really help in fog. the bar can be modified easily to go up about 3-4 in and still not be obstrucive to view and stillhold hella sized light. or it can go down to where the bar is just slightly above the hood and mount the lights on top. It is pricey because it is made of t6 6061 aircraft alumininm but it can be made cheaper with different materials, but it would look slightly different too. but same Idea. what do you think.

I've seen those low pro lights at the top of the windshield too. Look pretty nice imo.

That's a cool looking light! Not sure what I'm going to do about the light situation just yet though.

Carr light bar.

http://carr.com/lightbars.asp

Only downfall is you have to drill holes in the windshild post.but it has 8 sloted holes for just about any light config. you would want. mines been on my jeep for 2 years and no problems. mounts are cast alum. and cross bar is stanless. (no rust)

I live in south mississipi and ride nothing but woods and goat trails. had countless branches hit mine and the worst thing is it scratched the paint on my lights. and all it takes to fix that is some masking tape and some high heat black paint. my bar also pivits to fold the lights down if you have to go somewhere theres a low hangin limb that dont move .

i can attest to the lightbar being ripped off....I had a car light bar mounted to the drip rails on my XJ with 4 piaa's on it and the first trip out on some really tight wooded trails caused it to get ripped off. If these car light bars that require bolts to mount to your jeep would hold alot better i am guessing. on the xj they mounted with small L shaped clips that went under the drip rail not providing alot of support.

yea mine mounts to the A-pillar 3 bolts per side. come with stainless inserts you put in the drilled holes that expand as you tighten them down.

YOU! You were the guy I was talking to about this lightbar. I'm glad you finally showed up! What did the lightbar to to your fuel mileage? I've been hearing bad things about the light bars.

fuel mileage whats that? i own a jeep with a 4 banger i get no fuel mileage lol realy rip i never even checked my fuel mileage from stock to where it is now. all i can say it sucks i would guess around 11 to 12 miles a gallon. and i would say they have to affect your mileage some being the lights are flat and the more you add the more drag you add but whats a a lil fule loss to see where you are going at night (cause i do alot of night rides) plus i like the look of them but thats my taste and sorry about the disapear but work got hectic and seems like every one that rides with us with a stock jeep has been here every evening so i can help them with there lift. i lifted 2 tj's ,changed out a rear end in a yj and did brake jobs on all of them.

It's all good good, glad you're back! I've been up in the air about the lights. I love the way those look. Now I see the ones on the bottom so I'm in the air again... lol. I think I'm still like your's though. How sturdy are they?
