Haven't found a clear consensus online. I always thought the LJ trunk was larger but everything im finding online is saying that a bestop instatrunk for a TJ no matter the model year will fit an lj. So with that being said, what are my fellow LJ owners using for a trunk cover? I've looked at the covers but I don't want to cover up my backseat, just want to cover the trunk. Please help!!
I use the standard TJ insta-trunk in my LJ. I bought it because I wanted to have a small area that was somewhat secure to store things like my tool bag, winch accessories and the occasional laptop and/or camera bag. It works perfectly for that and still leaves a good amount of room between the trunk and the backseat for storing other stuff like my 20lb CO2 tank, my soft door uppers and lowers, backpacks, a small cooler and a recover strap. I like it and am totally happy with the division of space behind the rear seat after having it in or the past 10 years. I did have to drill a couple of holes in the side of my rig and install nutserts to mount it. It also comes out in a couple of minutes, but I have yet to ever remove it.
I also added several eye bolts to the insta-trunk so I can strap a net over it to keep stuff in the Jeep. Photo below.

thanks man I really appreciate that! I didn't realize that the back was enclosed! I thought it just was a top and sides and that the instatrunk was enclosed by the rear seat. Good to know!!!
I've made a cardboard template for a "instatrunk" for my LJ. But it will bolt into the top lip of the tub because the sub box I have in the back (from a previous car, don't judge me lol)
Should work pretty well with some security bolts. It's main purpose is to keep prying eyes out of the back and to keep the majority of the weather off the trunk with the top off.
I have been looking high and low for some and insta-trunk for my LJ and came up empty handed, then I took a look at the boards and it turns out I'm not the only one who is after one. I went though the trouble of designing one, so I figured I would share the plans if there is anyone else out there who wants to make one. I'm using checker plate aluminum, but you could use plywood or steel and it would work just as well. I wanted a continuous bed look, so it extends the full length of tub, as opposed to stopping at the wheel wells like other designs I have seen. For security I am going to used a threaded chain link with lock tight secured to the baby seat floor attachment points, which will allow me to remove it if I have to, but will be enough to stop random thieves...unless they have a crescent wrench and are smart enough to flip the seat down.I will also rivit an alum. angle to the rear door so that when it is closed the trunk can't be lifted. This will allow the trunk to be secure, but it wont have to be screwed into the tub at all. I will post photos when it is done. This can be modified to suit a TJ as well. Let me know if you have any questions.
