I thought my move to 35's would be easier than it is. I have decided on the wheels Rock Monsters 17" x 8.5" 5 on 4.5

Tires though I am finding are elusive.

I was leaning towards the Toyo Open Country AT2 35x12.5x17 There load rating is E :( Thought this was supposed to be easier with 17's

The Nitto Trail Grappler 35x12.5x17 is an E (34.84 diameter)
The Nitto Trail Grappler 315/70/17 is a D (34.61 diameter)

If I air down to 6lbs or so will that soften up the sidewalls enough or are they too much for a TJ? Then I guess the smaller 35 nitto might be better.

Sinister6, how far do you air down? Do you get flex in the sidewall? I like the bead locks on your build jeep.

I have run as low as 9 without beadlocks but with them I figure I can be in the 5-8 range without an issue.

Damn jgorm 18 on the street and still stiff. I am going to my local tire store, not a chain, not a jeep place, 20+ year place and talk tires tomorrow.

I might make it to the crawlorado meet in the springs this weekend, going to pick up a hardtop for winter.

Before the Beadlocks I've gone down to 7-9, since I've been ruining the Beadlocks I've gone as low as 2-3psi. Last February I had a vehicle hit me hard at about 40 mph square on my back tire hard enough to bend the housing! I had several cuts and slashes into a tire that was probably a little less than half worn but the sidewall held up! . I just replaced those tires last weekend, 6 more months of highway speeds & rock crawling. I would take an E rated tire that's bombproof over something that's going to fail at the slightest trama. You're in CO you know how harsh our off road environment can be! The other thing to keep in mind is that an E rated tire is going to be different from tire to tire. The MTZ is a softer compound than say a MTR and because of that it flexes better in the 8-15psi range and IMO hooks up better.

@4lowco yes, they make a 178.5 x5 on 4.5, for some reason they don't list it on their website. 4wheel parts had a set in stock or the lead time was a few weeks.

The Baja MTZs look nice, I looked at those years back. I have been happy with the BFG AT's but wanted to change it up, they have been solid, air down nicely. For 300 plus a tire I don't want to screw it up and get a crappier road ride. I ruled out the duratracs as I think the sidewall was quite soft and too many places said they cut easily.
