lockout hubs and regear question

I am running lockout hubs on Dana 30 and looking to regear front axle with 4.88 gears.I can only afford to do 1 axle at a time.Do I need to remove front driveshaft or will hubs staying unlocked be alright to drive on road until I can afford to regear rear axle?

With hubs you would be fine. BUT you've now made the 4WD worthless to use.
And why the front first? Pretty much dead weight until you do the rear.

I'd do the rear first to gain the benefits of it, then do the front if I had too.

But honestly I wouldn't do either until I could do both at the same time.

And PA winters are no place to be in a 2WD Jeep. Got chains?

I would disco the front anyway just because. It doesn't take that long and it is cheap insurance you don't have a brain fart an explode your t/case.

X2 on the above.

Hubs unlocked will be fine until you do the rear. They are what make the connection between your front wheels and the front differential/driveshaft. If you unlock them, theres no connection for the wheels to spin the differential gears or front driveshaft but also no 4 wheel drive until you do the rear. You might get away with 4 wheel drive on very very loose sand but not on pavement.

I've seen some try to use it on pavement because they think they need to when it's wet or when there is patchy ice and snow. At least up here in the North there are some morons like that.
