locksmith

before i waste 70 bucks on a locksmith i was wondering if you guys know if this is possible or not. my jeep did not come with a key to lock/unlock my middle console. im going to vegas in 3 weeks so i need to get this secure before i go. do you guys know if a locksmith can take out the old lock and add a new lock, or should i buy a replacement lock and do it myself ?(couldnt find one on 4wd after a quick look, but iv seen them before)

Mine is the same as the ignition/door key. Do you have an aftermarket console?

Yeah mine is the same as well. There pretty bogus tho when it comes to security. We had a neighborhood burgler the last month and both my glovebox and center consol were lockd. he ripped them both open. It didn't damage either of them tho but he had no troublegetting into them.

you might just need to play with it a little. Mine is a little tough till you realize that you can't just push the key all the way in, it won't turn unless you pull it up a bit

Ya, um.... I can unlock mine with my finger nail, or by simply squeezing the lock and turning it. try that.

ok to unlock it you need to put the ignition key in there, it only goes in half way and then turn it. Then to open it you need to press the silver part where the key goes and this will unlatch the thing so you can open it. Its like press it as a button and pull it open. If its locked it will simply not go in when you press the button.

ooops

yeah i put the key in half way and it turned effortlessly. in my defense i only messed with it for 10 seconds when i first bought the jeep 3 months ago, so give me some slack on this one

thanks for saving me 70 bucks.

The more cost effective piece of advice will be to not count on that setup keeping anything but the neighborhood snatch-n-grab kid out of it.

Like I said before it wont even keep that kid out!

I wouldn't put anything in there worth alot of value that you aren't afraid to loose. Just my 2c

Get a tuffy console and never worry about it again. I lost my key once and tried to get into it. Nothing short of a torch or a sawsall will work on that thing, its real rugged. I live in the city and have no problems sleeping at night with the doors off and just a cab cover on it.

Ct, what about the cd player?

Over here that wont fly either, they will see you have it all locked and they cannot get in there so they will most likely slash your seats and rip your speakers and whatever else they can think of.

Bottom line Don't Leave anything of value in any car The THEIVES WILL BREAK IN TO GET IT......Even if they only thing there is something of value. And a locked glove box console or whatever is just a perception of something of value is there. get a backpack or something if you have alot to carry, If not get a room with a safe in the lobby or in the room.

right now im content with the locked glovebox. of course its not unlockable, i could break it in 10 seconds probably with aggresive jerking, but its SOME protection. my car is always garaged, at home and at work so im only worried about opputinistic thiefs that do a quick check of whats inside.

a lock box bolted to the floor under the driver seat is what ill get eventually but things cost money. so ill put it off for a few months. i just emptied my money on my ultiment kit.

I've got my cd player in the Tuffy center console. They make one with a spot for the cd player specifically.
