Long Rifle Hard Case + Jeep = ??

So the title does kind of explain this. Basically I have my 2001 TJ and am trying to find out if there are any other shooters out there.

I have a few Pelican 1750 hard cases for my precision rifles. I would love to be able to go out to the hills with my Jeep instead of my truck when the lady / kid / I go out shooting. However as you can imagine I do not have enough room in the Jeep with the rear seat in to house the hard cases (haven't tried without the rear seats in because its not an option).

I am debating either a cargo rack on top or a rack on my bumper (trailer hitch rack).

Anyone do that ? Anyone do anything else that I am not thinking ?

With the back seat out its tight. I'm using a soft case too. A pelican ain't going to happen unless you wedge it in there some how. I would feel pretty uneasy about strapping one of my rifles to the outside of my Jeep. Sounds like a good excuse for an LJ. Ha!

I usually lay my shotgun across the back seat but it barely fits. I am thinking about making a mount that will clamp to the roll bar and hold the shotgun long ways down the center of the jeep on the roof between the front seats.

I just lay my rifle horizontally on the back seat. You could possibly wedge a case in the space behind the drivers seat, but never tried it before.

Is there enough room vertically from rear floor to roof? Maybe one version of a rifle mount will work attached to the headrest bars. search for Kolpin Rhino or similar. Like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003UY...3469550&sr=8-3

I feel your pain.....I spent about 2 hours with a 1750 case just looking for a spot I felt comfortable either mounting or strapping it.

I'm building a rack to hood mount it where my jack is now. it will move with the hood and be able to lock the case in the rack....and have locks on the case itself.

I have it built in my head....but am working on my bumper now. I'll post pics here when I begin the build.

Precision rifles need to be protected while in transport.....IMO...Pelican is the best.

I have an issue just laying my gun loose in the vehicle.

Could you find a place to mount this? http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001Q4...3470789&sr=8-7

You thought about suspending it from the rollbar ? Smitty (I know...) makes an overhead panel with molle attachments. Might be able to make that work.

Otherwise... Roof rack ? I love my Garvin Wilderness rack. Super strong. Frame tie ins. My LJ has plenty of room inside. The roof rack is pretty awesome to have for expeditions though. Can tie/strap down all sorts of gear and cases up there.

I recommend a Koplin gun boot placed in vehicle. Plenty of protection. I can't imagine any harm coming to my rifle going to a range that would require a big pelican case. A precision rifle generates precision recoil and handles it fine. It's not a Faberge egg. If it has a 30 dollar tasco scope that changes POI if you sneeze on it I understand. I have a roof rack for my hard top that I remove when I don't need it. Gas milage reasons mainly. I'd be more worried about it be coming a projectile in a collision there or thieves if you go in a gas station. Receiver racks are handy but same worry about security and off road they KILL departure angle. ( I bent one good before ) wasn't planning on off roading or I would have taken it off.

the shop I work at sells kolpin gun boots for 4-wheelers all the time and I keep trying to figure out, if I got one, were I could mount it to the jeep so I could still have the rear seat in and relatively easy access to my shotgun.

anyone have a kolpin (style) gun boot in their tj?

I just lay it behind back seat on speaker box. If no speakers or trunk it will straddle there.

That's made out of Kydex... Something you could do yourself and for a lot less money. ... Obviously doesn't have to be mounted there. Just wanted to introduce you to the magics of Kydex

Depending on if you have a soundbar, or if your rollbar is padded, you could just use giant velcro straps ? Does the case fit sideways ? You could put multiple industrial strength velcro STRAPS (not ties) together and velcro the case to the rollbar ? I'm talking 2" wide straps... Nothing weak that could let the case bounce around.

ive done that with my friends gun case. but kolpin has some really cool mounts that I would want to use for the case if possible. probably this one would be the best to try. im just not sure how to set it up and not be in the way of the soft top?
