Look what I've been up to........

Well, I've been on leave from the Army from September 3 until I report to Fort Riley on the 1st of October. Gearing up for a specialized team deploying to Afghanistan in December. However, I've got almost the entire month of September off, so I thought I'd let everyone in on my projects. Here they are.

1. I repainted my flares. They were faded from the hot Mojave Desert sun and were in dire need of some paint.

2. I modded my stock front bumper. I cut off roughly 4 and a half inches from each side, and added a couple of angle cuts to give the stock bumper a more aggressive look while helping approach angles too. I also welded all those damn holes and smoothed it out. Why does Jeep need that many holes in their bumpers? I only left the license plate holes in the front (CA tags), and got rid of all the rest. It helps that I was in a previous life a professional paint and body man. It came out really well.

3. I added a Tabor 9,000 lb. winch. It's made by Warn and I've gotten some good reviews about it, so I went with it. It helps that a buddy gave it to me for the low price of ZERO DOLLARS, too. Can't beat free!!

4. Lastly, I added some tow hooks. Nothing big, just a couple of 10,000 lb. units I got at a local Tractor Supply Company....(Thanks, Mr. Clifford!!)

I think that's about it. I'm adding the pics for everyone's amusement/enjoyment. Let me know what you all think.

I'll start with the flares. They needed paint so bad. I used Krylon Fusion, the Satin Black. That stuff is awesome. I got totally anal when I prepped them, once again, being a previous professional bodyman, I have to stand by my work. I removed the front signal lenses from the front flares, I also removed the flare extensions from the Jeep. The fuel bezel got in my way for a nice masking job so I removed it as well. Probably didn't need to, but I'm a perfectionist, so it would have bothered me all day if I hadn't. I masked everything off really well, cleaned the flares with Acetone, and put on 3 coats of the paint, waiting roughly 20 minutes between coats so the paint would have a chance to flash. Here are the pics for that project......

Before....needs some paint, huh?

Here's a pic of the masking. Closer to black, but still gray and faded...

And we're back in black!!

And the front flare with extension and signal lens back in place....

What a difference a day of prep and paint can make to these faded flares!!
I also repainted my tag bracket and the rear bumper jugs. I don't have any pics of them, though..

OK, here's the fun project. I decided I wanted to modify my stock bumper. I cut about 4 and a half inches off each side. I wanted the ends of the bumper to extend no further than the inside edges of my front signal lenses. I started off with a straight cut. I then added a 45 degree cut on the top to mimic the same cut on the stock bumper. I wanted something a little visually different, so I angled the front. I did it by eye and a tape measure, so I don't know the actual angle of the front cuts, but I like the look. Jeep found it necessary to add all kinds of holes to their stock bumpers, but I like the smooth look, so something needed to be done there. I removed the front rubber bumperettes, so that just added 4 more holes. I knew I didn't want foglights on the ends of my bumper, so I welded them closed, along with all the others except the license tag holes. In all, I welded shut 16 holes. Why in the hell are there that many holes in a stock bumper? Crazy. Anyways, after welding shut all those damn holes, I ground down all my welds so they were smooth. After prepping the bumper for body putty, I added a very light cover of putty and smoothed everything out. After 6 coats of priming and wetsanding, I got her as smooth as a baby's ass. I'm assuming that's smooth, I don't have any kids. That I know of....... On with my story. I painted it with a semi-gloss paint because I think it looks the best on Jeeps. Gloss black bumpers look too poser, and flat black fades too quickly. Here are the pics from beginning to end. I don't have any pics of the bumper with the actual bodywork being done, I was on a roll and didn't think to grab the camera and take any pics. The beginning and the end are both nicely represented, though, so don't give me any shit...

Here's the start. This was after cutting the stock bumper and removing it so I could grind the holes and prep it for welding. I call it my Jeep's naked front. She's such a whore...

OK, here's a close-up of the angle cuts I did with a surgical sawzall....

Here's a pic of all the holes ground and ready for welding....

Another angle....

OK, so the welding is done......

This shot was taken after all the welds were smoothed. Finally. 16 damn holes take a while to weld and smooth!!

More to follow. I've got to upload some more pics.....

Like I said earlier, I don't have any pics of the body work being done because I was on such a roll, but here's after all the smoothing and painting. This bumper got 3 coats of heavy duty black semi-gloss enamel. Here it is right after it's 2nd coat.....

And here are a couple of pics of it tentatively mounted to the front of the Jeep. Keen eyes will notice the top bolts just started and not threaded all the way in. I still had to mount my winch/plate, so I just stuck those bolts in to hold the bumper on while I took some pics.....

So far, so good. Now on to mounting the winch and plate to the bumper.

Well, I don't have any pics of the actual mounting of the winch and plate, but I do have these after pics. I think she looks pretty good for a couple days work!!

And my new personal favorite of my Jeep, the aerial view!!

So it was a fun couple of days with most of the cost being just labor and time. I had about $10 in repainting the fender flares. Pretty cheap. The winch was given to me. Very cheap. I bought the winch plate from Rough Country off eBay for $82 shipped. It's a quarter inch thick and about as heavy duty as they come. It also fit perfectly, so I feel real good about only paying $82 for it. It came 4 days after I ordered it, so there wasn't much of a wait, either. It's cool when we can add so much for so little.....usually Jeep projects tend to get out of control with the $$$$$$$, but this time it didn't.

Now, about my new lift and tires............................................. ....

And BTW, remind me to not go visit any of the surgeons in the Keys who use a "Surgical Sawzall"! Holy Crap, talk about meatball surgery! That must be an Army thing, do they carry battery operated ones, like my Black & Decker?

Is there synthetic line spooled on that winch? I cant tell if its just silver synthetic line or steel cable. Either way you got a hell of a deal. Another reason I ask is because I had a Tabor on my other rig and it didnt look like the spool was as full as your looks. Did you jsut get more cable or somethin?

I was stationed at Fort Irwin, north of Barstow for a year and a half. It sucked. I can't wait to get to Riley. My parents live an hour and a half from Fort Riley, and so does my sister's family, so I'm staying with them for my PCS leave.

Yeah, I fast roped in on a Blackhawk for that shot!!
We don't carry the battery operated ones, if we need to breach a door we use a battering ram, our foot, or a shotgun with breach rounds. Lots of fun. However, I think a battery operated sawzall would be alot of fun and that the Army should definately buy me one. For professional use, of course!!

It's steel cable, and the reason that it looks so full is that I hadn't even had a chance to tighten it up before I took that pic. It's spooled real loosely right now....I need to go out and unspool the whole cable and reel it back in nice and neat.

Thanks for the compliments, tiny. I went to college at K-State and have had many inebriated nights at Fast Eddie's and Rusty's Last Chance. I'll be sure to knock back a few in your honor.

Screw that, go with the AA12 automatic shotgun

LOTSA different rounds you can use for that, including fin-tipped grenade rounds

While fin-tipped grenade rounds would be alot of fun, I don't think I'd want to use one while standing next to the door I was breaching!! I love a well-placed kick, or, even better, det-cord. Blowing a door off its hinges is by far the most dramatic and the violence-of-action factor is up there!!

How did we end up on this subject? I love these threads, next we'll be talking about the price of wheat in Kansas!!!!
