Looking at a 2001 TJ, worth it?

Wanted to get some opinions. My father-in-law is looking at a 2001 Wrangler 5-speed with 108,000 miles. It is currently having some work done: new doors and gate, new paint. Asking $10,500. What do you think? I don;t know much else at this point other than it does run.

$10,500 for a rig with either body damage or serious rust is crazy. An unmodified TJ from that year with similar options and in excellent condition shouldn't cost more than $8,000.

Yeah. I got my '98 SE back in 2008-2009 with 57k miles on it and only paid like $8,900. And that's no damage anywhere with 31's and new wheels.

My parental paid 10,500 for a 2001 sahara with 104,000 on it, it was a west coast rig with some topical frame rust and several scratches around window hinges. Interior was...okay. Oh and this was 2 years ago..Still this day in age..thats a steep price for that jeep, id counter at 8.

not enough info....depends on whether it is an SE, Sport, or Sahara..what options does it have? does it come with both tops?

10 grand for any 2001 wrangler w/ 108K miles in 2013 sounds steep... add to that the fact it appears to be undergoing some major repair work....don't walk, run from this one.

Agree. There are better Jeeps out there for less money. Also, need more information because there are so many options and models that to just throw a number and year out is not quite enough. I see them for all kinds of prices and condition, but that does seem a bit high and I would be very suspicious of the "why" behind the body work. I would keep looking.

I am going to try and get more info today and let you all know. I know he said it did have a different front bumper, not sure which one. I think the doors had damage and that is why they are being replaced and painted. Will let you all know! Thanks.

That depends on location. I bought my '01 Sport a year and a half ago for $10K, which was below book value for this area. One owner, bone stock, never off road, 90K miles.

Concur w/most suggestions

If its stock and all oem your looking at new stuff, drivetrain trans or engine work on top of what is currently getting fixed,

Ask the owner if he can agree to a safety inspection. Offer to pay it.
If he agrees you have a 3rd party providing accurate info about a jeep you want to buy.
If the mechanic finds more problems then what PO knows
you have bargaining power and you decide if what the value is.
HTH.

Seems high. Spring is not the best time of year to buy as Jeeps are in even more demand. If it has any major work being done that should be a big red flag.

I don't see where the OP told us if it's a Sport, Sahara, or SE. NADA retail here for an 01 Sport with A/C and hard top here is $10275.
KBB private party value in "good" shape is right at 8K.

KBB def puts you in the ball park of where you need to be...depending on how mechanical you are as well its easy to find problem areas on jeeps..its a jeep. theres not much to it. In 2011 I payed 18,900 for my 04 wrangler sport..but it only had 32k miles..with warn bumpers front and rear with tire carrier...3" teraflex lift...oh warn power steering skid plate, and brush guard and winch plate with those cheapo bushacker budget fenders...the look good but the suck for function. Anywho...you need wayyy more info on this jeep. You needa drive it, and look it over reeeeaaaalllly good. Nice thing is, its private party. So a dealer hasn't covered up some issues with a pressure washer and some undercoat.
