looking to be a new jeep owner

hey guys i just became a member here and i currently have a dodge dakota but looking to sell that soon and surchase a jeep. i will be looking at a 97 wrangler with 4 inch lift and 33 tires with the 4cylinder 5speed. anything i should know before i start getting serious about it. from the pictures it looks nice. also has a ramsey winch and a hard top. ive been wanting one for awhile now. and drove acouple at work and loved it. wanting to get into some light off roading nothing too serious.

Hey, awesome! I just traded my Dodge Dakota in yesterday on a Wrangler...LOL

The only recommendation I could offer is personally I would look for a Jeep with the 4.0L engine in it...gas mileage will suffer a little bit, but I have driven both and the 4.0L has so much more get up and go. My buddy who sold me this Jeep used to own one with the 2.5L and when he brought mine back to the lot, he said, "Dang dude! This thing drives SO much better than my Jeep did!"

Just my opinion...we won't hate you if you choose the 4 cylinder.

Best advice is not to buy it. Get one with a 4.0 Inline6 or not at all. IF you get lucky look for one with a towing package and a Dana 44 rear axle.

4.0 fo sho!

What gearing does it have? If they are running 33 on stock axles it wont have much get up and go as normal.

Go with 4.0, but get one between 2000 and 2005. I think those years are better than the 90's. Get one with a hardtop included in the deal, and when you find one that matches that description, look it up and down, through and through. Make sure you're the one that's taking the Jeep for a test drive, and not the salesman taking you for one.

I have never owned a 2.5 but I would not want less than the 4.0 that I do have. There is also an arguement for an auto if you are going to do some serious wheelin'.
What ever you get, get under it first and look at just how much off road "" use"" (or abuse) it has seen. Natually...less... is good!
Ther are plenty off TJ's out there in really great condition that have been well cared for, just be PATIENT while you looking and keep reading as much as you can on this Forum and all will be good.

thats What i heard. Is to look for the 4.0 cuz of the power difference. I dont think i could afford to get a newer one like that. I will only have 5 thousand for one. So my choices are kinda limited. I just think the tj look better.

I stumbled upon my "new" jeep back in may. just happened to have too many goodies to pass up. 4.0 I6, hardtop, D30/44, 31x10.50x15, and low miles. had to jump on it. glad i did.
